I honestly don't tend to eat lunch or dinner at/from the airport(s), unless its the very rare Popeyes spicy chicken po'boy sandwich. Now that's my guilty pleasure. I convince myself its okay since I maintain a fairly active lifestyle at and away from work. (Now that's tooting my own horn)

Yeah, I was pissed to see chick fil a moving in. Last I saw that used to be a Charleys steakery. Not gourmet by any stretch, but I could eat their buffalo chicken sandwich daily.
 
Just watch- in a year and a half, the hiring picture will be VERY different.

Getting serious for a moment... you seem to sound entitled and expect a job at a major just to knock on your door and say hello. You want the job, but *sound* like you aren't willing to put in a modicum of work or sacrifice to get it. Maybe you're happy at your regional, maybe that's as far as you'll advance in this career. But you'll get zero sympathy from me, I'm a thirty-eight year old FT student and I work FT. And usually pulling twenty-four to thirty-two hours overtime, a pay period. Why because I'm paying for school. Sacrificing my 'me time' for the hopeful reward that comes with hard work, and often only having one day off a week. Why because degree will not pay for itself, or knock on door and say oh hai!

No one is forcing you to not do the ground work to make yourself competitive as hiring ramps up, but at least don't whine and bitch about it.

Maybe you missed the post where I said I was hopeful to get a job at a major. I don't think I'm entitled to anything. I'm patient. I've learned to be patient in this industry. My time will come, whether it's at a major, or somewhere else. I'm looking for that job that maximizes my time off, and affords me the means to enjoy it. I really don't care where it is.

I don't think that's a fair characterization. Some of us just believe that people should be chosen based on actual qualifications.

I agree, but you have to agree that they can't interview everybody. There are thousands of applications that look exactly the same. They have to be able to pare that number down a little somehow.

No application ever looks exactly the same. And while they certainly need to pare down the stack, I would prefer that they did by real qualifications (PIC time, graduate degrees, number of type ratings, etc.) rather than based on who paid an entry fee to WIA even though they don't have a uterus.

To be clear, I don't fault anyone who jumps through those hoops and goes to WIA, OBAP, or anything else. You play the game based on how the rules are written, not based on how you want the rules to be written. But I do disagree with how the rules are written.

Agreed. That's why I haven't been to any of those things, but I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that I gotta start playing the game.
 
Well, how else do you explain a whole class of new hire - 25 with 24 being military. I believe there are just as many civilian pilots as military who have clean records and highly qualified. I am curious to know the breakdown though.

It will be interesting to see how they handle issues if and when the balloon goes up. The reserve/guard guys dropping MLOA might cause some scheudling pain

I wasn't being sarcastic -- I'm fully aware that Delta, right now, has intentionally decided that here at the beginning of the hiring wave they want to front-load with as many qualified military guys as possible. This is also coinciding with a pretty massive flood of pilots leaving the military, too (compared to any time that I'm aware of since the 1990s). All around the unit I'm in, and amongst former squadronmates located elsewhere, nearly everyone is getting hired by Big D and nearly none of them by by United or American. In fact, some of those being hired by Delta weren't even able to make it past the Hogan assessment for United.

Delta has, for as long as I've been aware (which is only back into the mid/late 1980s), traditionally favored military folks. People can debate why and if that's fair until they're blue in the face, but that simply "is" and "has been". Somebody there decided that's what they wanted to do, had the authority to determine that course of action, and it has stayed that way (so maybe ask Capt Kraby why the next time you see him). They've decided what works for them.

You have to realize, too, that there are also airlines out there who distinctly don't desire military pilots, so this isn't some unfair magic ticket that mil dudes have been awarded.
 
You can call it whining if you'd like. That doesn't bother me coming from someone who doesn't understand the joy of being woken up at 6am by two kids climbing in his bed asking daddy to make them French toast and turn on some cartoons. I just think it's ridiculous that it's nearly required to get hired. And if you read through this thread, it's not "go to one." It's "go to every one out there." Honestly, I don't understand why there is a bigger male presence at a WIA conference, other than "if I want this job, I have to fake it." Because the sentiment in the crew lounge isn't what is echoed here.

I have two friends that do this. Both do it to be home with there families every day. One works for CAE and the other Flight Safety. The only downfall with flight safety is that they don't allow any flying for hire where CAE encourages it!

No I didn't miss the point. And this could just be cause of the internets, but the impression whether real or misunderstood that I'm getting from what you're saying is that you want job, but don't want/or like to play the game or have to jump through the hoops to go about getting that coveted job. Because you want maximum time off for yourself, and to spend with your kids.

I commend you on being a father, but life is about politics, and learning and knowing how to play the game and win. Those that play well succeed, those that don't, flounder, become bitter and whine about it and their many short comings. Life isn't fair, nothing s promised. Sometimes you have to make small sacrifices in life in the short term to be able to get what you want in the long term future. It sucks, yes. But such is life. Again I'm not saying hit every conference in creation. But try to find a healthy balance between life, family and putting forth the time/energy necessary to find that perfect forever job. Get your face out there, get your name on recruiters lips. Volunteer, do whatever. Then when you've finally gotten that golden nugget job, not only will you be making more money, and hopefully working less hard/frequent. But that golden ticket job will positively impact your life and thus also your kids life, and you will also hopefully have more time off to spend with them.

Look I know this story and live and regret it EVERYDAY. When I was eighteen my mom told me, to take the hit today, to guarantee success in the future. But I was young, hardheaded and thought that I knew everything, and besides dealing with some issues, I wanted everything now. Hot clothes, nice car, hot b*tch, stay out late and party, you know all the floss. And I chased it hard and lost site of the goal, and what's important. And that is why I'm thirty-eight and still in college and working FT and going to school FT, and making up for precious lost career time. Because I finally learned the lesson later in life, that my mom was right. And now I'm paying the price for not listening, and let me tell you, that it sucks.
 
I understand. I remember worrying about getting on with a regional. I don't know of anyone who was in my flight classes in college who didn't make it to the regionals that wanted to. Of course the sooner the better but it'll happen .
