Guess they didn't learn the first time.. Delta's new KSEA-PAJN run.

And at the end of the day… who cares.

It's an airplane and a runway. If it was that much of a Herculean challenge to operate there, the FAA probably wouldn't even allow 121 ops there.
Eh, you'd be surprised some of the airports they let a couple 121 operators go in to with pretty big airplanes. Speaking of Hercules...

PAEH comes to mind in the Herc...or AK40 - hell, I don't really like going in there on a crummy weather day in the Navajo, and there are at least two 121 operators that go there...

Romanzof to.

But don't worry. It's exactly like flying overgrown beechjunk ILS to ILS in the most airport saturated part of the world. That's why Alaska and Delta are going to be competing on the new LAX-CZF route.

I dunno, I see it like this. Obviously there will be some reliability issues until Delta can get a comparable approach to the one Alaska uses. Obviously they are working on it now. But who knows what kind of a summer it will be. It may be a beautiful summer where they wont have any issues, or it could be a crap summer and they will have some major headaches. Who knows? Both airlines can fly whatever approach they have very well, there is no better airline. Obviously with a place like Juneau having some first hand knowledge is nice, but its not crucial. We are not talking flying around in 500 and 2 out here in Western Alaska where first hand knowledge is crucial. Its a freaking approach, we can all fly those.

Now for the Alaska vs Lower 48 debate. No one group is better. The flying we do is worlds apart. To me flying at 500 and 2 is not scary, and can be done safely in certain areas. Obviously there are areas where I wont go with that weather. You just cant be afraid to turn around if you get uncomfortable. But what scares the crap out of me is the thought of dealing with airspace like New York. Different strokes for different folks.

Repeat after me:

We're professional pilots. We fly someone else's airplane where the bossman says to fly them.

Cock-measuring contests belong at all-male revues, bachelorette parties and the "Larry Craig Memorial Bathroom Stall" at KMSP. Unless, of course, you're quickly changing out of your uniform after passing through KCM and enroute to the bar before flying home.

Do this.

Here is one I wont go to on a crappy day. And let me tell you, that valley is narrower than it looks.

Ooh, yeah, that's a super sketch one. TBH, Dutch Harbor is pretty sketch at times too, the special approaches get you down to 500' and 3SM, but you're like 4 miles from the airport and have to make quite a bit of a turn inside the caldera to line up with the runway, and AS used to take 737s in there?!

Ya, we had the specials for dutch. I think the sims for training that approach should be required to have the visuals like Juneau, a white screen doesn't really prepare you for that. Don't forget to put the gate down before you land.

It's like super cray cray.

Having worked in the special airport qual area at suthn' jets, Juno (tee hee) is nothing new with its critical terrain and environment. I routinely landed in quito at 9300 feet in fog after flying 5.5 hours in the middle of the night with very high surrounding hills and one crazy missed approach. They get the challenging airport thing and know how to teach it.

JNU is being taken very seriously and the way we are operating into there initially is actually unprecedented.

Got a copy of the plate to Quito - that'd be pretty cool to see

I vote for Eek. Because that will be what the passengers will say when they get off.

And at the end of the day, it's not like you've got to get a bomb, over target, on-time, right as the enemy convoy is between mountain tunnels so the fate of the world is resting on your mission… Miss the approach, nukes are launched and it's full-on Joel Osteen "Send me MONAAAAY" armageddon is on. All while surrounded by AAA and ground-to-air missile installations. AMARIGHT @MikeD @Hacker15e ?

Unless, of course, JNU is.

Well, there are some parts of JNU I am not fond of!

It's an airport.

There's business to be done for people flying in and out of there and also those on vacation traveling in and out to go to points beyond.

And cargo! :) And mail.

As you know, there's no one standing around the pilot lounge giving pep chats about going into Juneau. It's just another destination and another "Special Airport". If it's a good layover, people will be excited. If it's a short layover, no one will care.

This whole thing has gotten silly. When are we going to drink some beer, man?
