Guess they didn't learn the first time.. Delta's new KSEA-PAJN run.

Delta just doesn't have the lower-mins PAJN approaches approved yet. Give it time. I guarantee Delta can handle it just fine; they simply need approval.

And I hate to rain on the parade, but I've landed in way, way worse stuff in a 767 than I ever had in anything small. Transport jets are very capable machines; reliability is far greater than anything you'd see in a piston or small turboprop.

The point I am saying is there is an attitude that Delta can't do it as they don't have the 'local' knowledge. While local knowledge is important, so is having excellent resources to create the tools to make it happen.

Far be it for me to want to agree with the JC Alaska Mafia (I like that), but in this case they are right. They said Delta wouldn't be able to spin up a reliable operation in time to start service for this summer and as @AUAeropilot said, the custom procedures won't be approved until next year probably. Nobody (except maybe a select few) were saying Delta CAN'T do JNU correctly, rather that they wouldn't be able to do it in the time frame they had for start of service. And if they go a full summer of poor service reliability you can be damn sure they will have trouble convincing the folks up there next summer will be better because of a paperwork authorization change.

I would like to see what the reliability will be this summer for Delta into JNU. I do think it will be greater than the JC Alaska Mafia (perfect name) thinks. Yes, the RNP stuff may not be ready, but what WILL be the mins Delta will use? They probably already have a chart and stats with 'anticipated delays/diverts' based on 'historical tendencies'.

What will be 'fun' to watch is the games Alaska and Delta will play with gate space, etc.

The LDA Z is 1000/2 with all the lights working. The MAP is 4 miles from the airport with a hill in between, and a 20 degree turn 1/4 from the threshold. And the weather at the MAP and the airport are two completely different micro climates.

Oh well if it's not an ILS, those of us flying jetz can't do it. ;)

Yawn. After having my morning coffee and a banana, my living room and the bathroom have two entirely different micro-climates (one with a Venusian quality)

Yep, Juno. Not ALL of Alaska, like the last 15 pages of dongle swinging(with a few snippets of really interesting information) have been about.

I was going to steer clear of the discussion because there's no way that I can risk not sounding like a dick, but there are places in the world outside of Alaska that present certain operational challenges.

Hell, mowing the lawn at noon in the middle of July doesn't mean I'm more of a 'man' than someone living in Connecticut that's bitching about how it's 70 while he's doing the same, it's familiarity, repetition and, in some cases, climatization.

Now here's the "no way not to sound like a dick" part.

If they're flying into Quito in the middle of the night with a two-man reserve crew, or operating hassle-free into Bogota multiple times per day, Alaska is going to present a new challenge, not an impermeable barrier.

This whole discussion reminds me of the last parts of "2010: Odyssey 2" where the monolith says:

ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA
ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE
Why everyone thinks Juno is the hardest place on earth only for the sharpest pilots and the Pope has declared that only a handful of people should dare operate there completely confounds me.

Look at the route network, Juno isn't the toughest by far. I'm sorry, but it's not.

Anyway, who cares. See ya at the layover bar.
