Some hot chick walks into a turning prop

Well...duh!

At least I didn't call them gay.
Or black.
Or Muslim.
Or....

....wait for it....

....Dutch.

Oh lord, don't bring up the Dutch.

Eight feet tall and always right. Even when they're wrong.

:)

No, no one would give a crap because you're a white male. You probably wouldn't even make the news, equality is sweet, as long as some can pick and choose.

Oh Jhugz, you know my reparation check from you bounced!

Pay up or suffer the consequences.

Does darwinism not kick in with people? Like.....That thing is loud and dangerous!!!!! Damn I'm not going near that!!!!! I feel bad for her, but does loud noise and spinning objects not frighten people?

Wasn't it dark? She may not have been able to see exactly where the reach of the prop was. It sounds like she wasn't in the middle of it, as she survived; am assuming she was caught near the tips or slightly inward. Further assuming that any more in and she would've been fatal. Again, just assumptions; but the dark light may have been very contributory. We just don't know.

I seem to remember an accident not unlike this that resulted in a private pilot getting their certificate suspended. His wife (sadness) walked into the prop, and he lost his flying privileges. The FAA contended, and the NTSB agreed, that the pilot allowing the passenger to exit the aircraft with an engine operating was careless or reckless so as to endanger the life of another.

Really sad. Such a pretty girl too.

I'm not going to throw stones but sometimes we forget we're responsible for everything.
Who is/are this "we" you are speaking of?

Is that what decency has been re-named? "Politically correct"? When did that happen?

No one's talking about hypothetical maybe-racist/sexist scenarios, but an actual sexist scenario. (But I agree there are times when people play the race/sexism/reverse sexism/racism card when there's no call for it.)

Right... way more famous as a person who got mangled by a propeller and whose "fame" will end once that story gets old. Way cooler to be "famous" for that than for being a success at what she was doing before (she was apparently just making her break before this happened).

I'm sure she's thrilled - you should visit her in the hospital on one of her breaks from physical therapy and tell her how lucky she is to have lost a hand and possibly an eye.

Also, you can probably glean from the posts in this thread how very fortunate a woman is in our society when she isn't considered attractive. People are so kind to them, so interested not in their looks but in who they are... it's really pretty awesome to be an ugly chick. Everyone says so.

Do you not know how to use Google? Or is your mom not home to do it for you?

Sorry, just... had to...

Hot dang SC! I'm here in the JFK pilot lounge and a lurker wanted me to tell you "BOOYAAAH!" :)

Not to minimize the human aspect of this tragedy, but does anybody have any idea how much a prop-strike teardown is going to cost for that Husky?

Well, i guess its not a "sudden stoppage." I'm not sure how much the composite props are, but if it takes a brand new prop, id say in the 5k range.

If this was a regular fat ass dude like me, everyone would be calling me a dumb ass, and the pilot would never be mentioned. Apparently, this situation is a tragedy, because some say that this girl was attractive. I'm not even sure how much of a "success" this girl was. I never heard of her before this, and im from dallas. Yes, its a terrible thing that happened, but if it was a 150lb Chinese guy that walked into a prop out in California, would this thread be this long? Oh, wait...

I thought a prop-strike was a prop-strike in the eyes of the FAA regardless of sudden stoppage?
This might come across as a slightly morbid question, which is not my intention, but you got me thinking about it...do you think there was a change in RPM and/or "Hg, even if for a fraction of a second? If so, is that enough to warrant a teardown, or does the engine/prop have to come to an actual sudden stop?
$5k is a lot of money, but not as bad as I was thinking. Does insurance usually cover that? How far down does the engine need to be torn down and inspected? I'm not an A&P (yet) and apologize if these are dumb questions, but I'm just curious about what's involved in a prop-strike (technically speaking) and what the regs say.

I'm not an A&P (fair warning) i just know what ive experienced. A sudden stop is just that, a complete stoppage. Think about a prop hitting the runway. Insurance wont cover it, and the engine itself doesnt need to be tore down if it wasnt a sudden stoppage. The worst damage you'll see without a sudden stoppage is maybe some busted rings and some bent blades, but thats enough to be FUBAR.

Per Lycoming SB 533A, this is considered a prop strike and they recommend teardown of the engine. Depending on the exact model, there may be ADs present that require certain actions (such as replacement of the crank gear bolts) after a prop strike, which would require disassembly of the engine.

Even a relatively minor prop strike like this can cause some pretty nasty internal engine damage, at least in my understanding.

As amazing as this sounds, I asked my GF to read this thread, and to give her take on it. AMAZING!!! I KNOW!!! I ACTUALLY ASKED A WOMAN FOR HER OPINION! WHAT'S MORE SHOCKING, ME ASKING A WOMAN HER OPINION, OR ACTUALLY HAVING A GF?! Anyways.... I'll let her chime in now.... :D

As a woman, I feel that feminism, and the entire feminist movement has done far more damage to women than any other movement that has had "woman's movement" stamped on it. There were expectations, and roles, and things that we are uniquely created to do, just as men have things that they are uniquely created to do. Since the beginning of time. And so, someone 40 years ago, a group of academics decide that they can speak on my behalf for what should be the standard and expectation in my life? 40 years ago women were successfully running businesses, no different than today. 40 years ago, women were successfully raising families, better, and more effectively than they are today. So... what's different? We are now not only expected to do all of the things we were were created to do 40 years ago, but also maintain a full-time career, and pursue the same things that a man is to pursue. Why should I thank ANYONE who gave me that short stick?

That you feel the need to come on a forum and play the "I don't antagonize, I just point it out when I see it" card is such a ridiculously lame excuse for pushing your feminist agenda. You're better off trying to preach to people you can actually influence; a 5th grader maybe. You'll have better luck than with a group of very type A professionally committed men who really enjoy what they do and the unique camaraderie found in aviation. Please refrain from speaking for me. I've watched women like you speak for me for 40 years, and we're seeing how that's worked out.... Hence the reason I've wasted my time addressing you directly.

Oh for Christ's sake. Can we all just admit that the headline is rude and move on? Cause it is, and we should. I am sick to death of both sides in The Culture Wars.

I don't think Christ cares, Boris. :)

"No, don't do this for MY sake, young Jedi..."

I don't agree with your girlfriend...and neither does my 82 year old mother in law, nor would my mother have (RIP).

Does your girlfriend vote? Maybe we should go back before sufferage....how far do you want to go back?

How about when women were used as chattle (oh they still are in many cultures) they were (and are) still property.

Used to be women didn't have a (reasonable) choice as to whether or not they wanted a career. If they did work they were paid oft-times 33%-50% less for the same work as a man. When I went on the fire department (in 1988) Women were treated far differently than men on the job. That was only 23 years ago.

If your girlfriend wants to make a statement here she should speak up... we would welcome her opinions and a hearty debate..

..as far as being "expected" to do all the things that a women did 40 years ago plus hold down a career...
that merely points out that she doesn't in fact get it.

A free woman may be "expected" to do things but needs only do the things that satisfy her, and the commitments SHE has made. (Just the same as men.)

If you looked at what furnished the American home in the 60's, you could still afford THAT lifestyle on one income. (I'm not going to list the differences, either you're old enough to remember them or your not truly old enough to really understand the huge leaps in individual freedoms women HAVE enjoyed in the last 40 years.)

The fact that the media still covers "hot" and attractive women (and men mind you) is evidence that we still have a way to go, but I'm glad for my wife that many (not all to be accurate) of the barriers that would have been in my mothers way have been removed.

Now, I'm not pissed at you or your girfriend for having your perspective...I might hope that you would have an open mind enough to see why others believe the way they do. To be mad at SC for stating her beliefs is not really fair either...women like "her". I'm married to a woman like "her"... I am a man like "her", my sisters are like "her", my mother was like "her", my mother in law blazed the trail.

I stand for your (girlfriend's) right to be...and setup...and live the life that she wants...that is what the "Women's Movement" (it is actually a "Human Rights" movement) was (and is) all about anyway.

What the heck, Bumblebee...??? :concern:

Waaaay too much common sense you got there...

I think you need a chauvinist mob and common male adjustment. It's $99.00 this weekend only!

Couple of excellent responses by SC...

The whole title of this thread was pure flame bait, and pretty darned disgusting. I can't even believe there is serious debate on this, really pretty frickin sad. Hope she mends as best as possible and makes adjustments.
