SWA upping the ante? Going the hardball route?

Re: Report: SWA prepared to alter AirTran plans if pilot int

I've made the decision not to ride on Southwest due to the attitude/arrogance being shown to my friends that fly at AirTran. Give'em hell boys and don't vote yes just because they've got a gun to your head.

Then they're in a worse position then ever. They spit in SWA's face when the good, first offer was made, to think they would have sweetened the deal is laughable. It's David vs Goliath and Goliath will not fall.

Some of us have to fight the good fight.

The Air Tran guys and girls will make the right decision for their pilot group, but as has been explained over and over again here...it wasn't an easy decision to turn down the previous SLI agreements.

But this isn't the time to put up a fight since they gave a fair deal to start with. This isn't a majority of SW pilots turning this down, it's the new kid on the block. As much as I would love for them to integrate flawlessly, SW is not going to lose it's current pilot group by bowing to ATN demands.

The difference is SW will lose nothing by playing hardball, ATN planes and routes are just icing on the cake.

Seems to me that the wisest course of action would be to just torpedo the whole deal (if they still can). At this point, no good comes of this, whatever happens. IMHO, etc etc.

It wasn't such a fair deal to start with. Better than what they've got now, but certainly not fair.

They were never going to get a fair seniority integration, they got a boatload of money instead. It may not have been fair, relatively speaking, but it was the best they were going to get. As far as I know, they don't have a whole lot of leverage in this situation.

This really isn't going to turn out well at all.

Do you mean, like, Southwest's lobbyists and ALPA's lobbyists get into a knife fight in the Capitol building's cafeteria some day soon?

'Cause it seems like this is headed towards senators and judges without some kind of conciliatory gesture by someone.

It don't take a swami to predict that SOMEONE gets denied a jumpseat SOMEWHERE over this crap. Rinse, wash, repeat. Ugh.

We had a pretty "Disneyesque" merger at Southernjets. Of course we have small pockets of people who will just resort to kick rocks all the way until they "die mad", but most have just moved on. About the only way to tell the difference is usually a choice of layover clothes and big honkin' Wilford Brimley-like mustaches... Even on the women (kidding, M.M-D! of course! :))

Besides, jumpseat wars are the equivalent of "Some guy from Fresno stole my pocketknife so I'm going to not answer any ambulance calls from people who have Fresno mailing addresses to teach 'em a lesson". Ooooooookk!

Did you actually type that with a straight face? The first offer was crap and they've gotten progressively worse. At this point the ATN folks are better off in STFD mode. SWA is coming off like a bunch of jackarses with a god complex in this merger. Man that koolaid spreads far. They are not and will not ever be close to that.

Exactly. As far as the ATN pilot group goes, the best thing that can happen at this point is for the merger to be called off.

But I can't imagine that Southwest will actually throw away a $1.4 billion purchase over something as petty as this. If they do, they've got one of the worst management teams in the airline industry, and that's really saying something.

I think SW management is the best in the industry. They are protecting the core group during this process while offering ATN a good, not perfect offer. They will throw away a $1.4 billion dollar deal because the long term effects of having this go real bad would cost far more than that.

It's kinda funny you have to admit... We all complain about our managements about how horrible they are because they don't support us. Then Swa management gives support for their pilots during this ACQUISITION and now they are the worst in the industry??? We're never happy are we?

Southwest suggests possible Plan B for pilot-integration issue
Southwest Airlines has proposed an alternate plan regarding the integration of seniority lists for Southwest and AirTran Airways pilots as the two carriers continue to merge operations. If the pilots fail to reach a mutual agreement and turn down an initial proposal, Southwest may have to execute Plan B, which involves canceling a full integration of the two carriers, AirTran's union leaders told pilots in a presentation. "If we receive a 'no' vote, it means that we cannot execute the original integration plan and we will have to reset," Southwest spokesman Paul Flaningan said.
