I saw a Delta 75 captain this morning with a backpack (he was already in the flight deck so I cannot speak as to how he got it to the plane)

Then I'll say we are all unprofessional. There is not a pilot reading this, replying to this, etc who has never, at some point in their career knowingly violated the FOM.. It hasn't happened..

I guess we are all entitled to our opinions....I can't say that I have ever said to my self, "self, you know this is against company policy, but you are going to do it anyway." but to each their own....I don't have to worry about the airline FOM ( far more restrictive) anymore.

You don't have to say "HAHAHAHA Breakin' the law, breakin' the law!" to be breaking the law.. It's not an opinion. It's a fact. There is not a pilot in a cockpit who has not knowingly violated the FOM, and if it can be argued there are, then I'd tell you that there just are a bunch of guys who don't know their FOM's..

Who really gives a crap what pilots carry their crap in? For regional pilots the image reflects the pay. Maybe its good for the public sees them dressed the way they are with spiked hair, backpacks & Ipod. Hell, most of you are just probably jealous because they STILL have hair! :cwm27:

Nothing beats "Johnny Bluetooth". He's so important, that he must be ready at any moment to accept any phone call. You are so space age, so high tech, so important, and just so darn cool, We mortals can't compete. I refuse to acknowledge anyone who is wearing those when they are talking, even if I'm quite sure they're taking to me. I haven't seen it of iPods on in the terminal but I do see my fair share of sunglasses on forehead with some spikiness and beached tips. Dooooooood!

Are you seriously going to attempt to be as unrealistic to tell me there is a pilot out there who is under the rule of their FOM that hasn't violated it?
That's sorta like trying to say that there is a person who holds a drivers license who has never committed a traffic violation, or a pilot who has never violated a FAR..

I will tell you right now that I am certain that I do not recall a tome when I intentionally violated my company's FOM. Did it happen, yes, did I intentionally do it, no.... But according to you, that cannot be true, so you win. OK?

Actually, it is pretty funny when I'm in the hotel crew room in certain "hub" hotels: The mechanics will actually chat with me. Of course, once I put on the monkey suit I'm back to being one of THOSE people.

I thought the clean shaven thing had to do with th O2 mask and making a seal to your face when you put it on.Meh, it's fine. It's always a strange double-standard with pilots; if, say, I was clean shaven but weighed 300 lbs, there'd be no question. But since I have a goatee, even being decently fit and wearing my uniform properly, well now I'm just unprofessional.
Clean-shaven is the norm when you fly domestic, but overseas there are pilots with full Titanic captain beards. A simple goatee (Van Dyke I guess...connected with a mustache) is really not outrageous at all out here. In fact, it's the cultural norm in a lot of places we fly to.

It seals without a problem (I also keep mine trimmed down to about 1/4"). Many foreign airlines allow beards, too.
