SkyWest Hiring FOs

How realistic is it to switch to the CRJ if you get hired into the Brasilia? Do you lose your seniority if you switch to a different plane than you were hired into?

Thanks for explaining it. I'm also guessing that the starting pay wasn't 22/hr a couple years ago.

I know it's splitting hairs, but I'm in a place where I'm trying to figure out a budget that seems somewhat plausible to live as a first year F/O. Thanks for the honest replies.
Those are pretty much the same...maybe 1-3% increase

It can happen... My sim partner went to the jet after a year, I waited on the Bro for the upgrade. Once hired you maintain your hire date seniority.

I probably came off as a little salty with my remark about splitting hairs, didn't mean to offend if I did. I get a little cranky sometimes with this industry so I hope you didn't take it the wrong way. Either way you look at it, its rough and it is certainly a good idea to have a solid plan moving forward. Best of luck.

23k the second year!... i thought it would be more for some reason.... Thanks for sharing the info, it really is helpful

Ok, one question, could you have made more if you wanted to?

Lee pretty much hit it all on the head, and you'll notice his reference to fo's who had good attitudes didn't include me. :) To answer could I have made more if I wanted, NO. I could not have. Pay was 22 an hour when I started, actually it went to 22 while I was still in Groundschool. The combination of being stuck in the bro for 3 years combined with 2 1/2 years of reserve during which I NEVER once broke guarantee, meant that I had absolutely NO chance to make more than what I made. It sucked, in fact it sucked royal a$$, however, it was all due to timing. If I had come to skywest when I had the times and all my flight school friends came here I could be a SLC RJ capt on reserve right now, but I chose to fly in alaska, and then haul freight and river guide in the grand canyon. so I timed it wrong. Things are moving now. I reckon a newhire will probably hold a line pretty quik, will prolly be able to go to the jet in a year and make much better(still not enough but better) money. BUT, I am as Lee stated the poster child for what CAN happen when the music stops and you're in the wrong seat. To add to my pains I have 3 kids and a stay at home wife, so you can survive, but it SUX

Uhhh I WAS referring to you as well with that! I'm not saying that a good attitude means you hover around the crew lounges and concourses skipping and flitting about like a hummingbird that’s just intravenously injected himself with kool aid, caffeine and Tabasco, giving everybody high fives and praising the company as if his soul’s just been redeemed. :D

Good attitude shows when, despite the crappy situation you have been placed in, you are pleasant to fly/work with, do your job with skill and pride yet still somehow find a way to keep an even keel. And in general terms, be happy with life.

I know you were not thrilled to be stuck for so long, I sure would not have been. But you never left a bitter taste when we flew or talked.

Like Bumblebee said you dont lose your overall senority in the pilot group. When things are going smoothly guys jump from the right seat to left seat and from one plane to another plane all the time. They do, however compete schedule wise with the other pilots in their seat and base. For example a Brasilia FO might be fairly senor compared to the other Brasilia FO's in Fresno, getting the schedules and trips he wants. Say he then transitions to the RJ in Fresno, he now competes schedule-wise with a completely different set of pilots. If majority the other RJ FO's have greater senority than him, he will end up with schedules that are less desirable.

Kind of changing the subject here, but Ive got some questions that you guys can probably answer for me. Is it set in stone that all new hires start in the Brasilia or is there any chance for an RJ right out of training. Secondly, are there specific new hire bases, or is that all just luck of the draw. I know that the pay sucks and the QOL does too, so dont bother telling me about all that. Im just trying to decide between Eagle and Skywest and weighing the pros and cons. I like the domiciles that skywest has to offer, but i know 2 guys who just went thru training at eagle and one got the erj and the other got the crj. Just wondering what the odds are of getting into the rj either in den or cos. Maybe Im dreaming, let me know.

In was hired into the jet, then asked if I would go into the Bro on the first day of class...bases are assigned by seniority in class at the end of ground school.(pick three get the best available)

So, is that typical, the switcheroo you were talking about? Also, how does the seniority work for the new hire class at skywest? I heard from some guys at eagle that the way they do it is the oldest guy in the class has the most seniority and it goes down the line, oldest to youngest. Is that the industry standard?

Not common to the best of my knowledge, seniority by SSN

I believe we have reached the end of the list of EMB FO's willing to transfer to "anywhere" ie. IAH, MSP and so new hire's are now being awarded the RJ.

True, I started new hire ground on JAN 7 not Jan 1 so a week difference, finished IOE in time to bid for March, had a line in FAT for March, April,May, June then went to perma reserve in SLC for the rest of 08 all of 09 and 10 months of 2010. My W2 from first year shows 17,405.38 second year 23,704.38 and last year 26,421.82 big money, livin the dream, tfayd, any questions?

Better than at the end of a shovel. Where have you heard that?

Tell Rick hi for me!

Most likely bases for that would be ORD and IAH?

Yeah, what I heard is that there will be no other bases awarded to either new hires or transfers/transitions until IAH and MSP are fully staffed. Just what I heard from a non official source.

So is it pretty safe to assume that a new-hire would have a snowballs chance in hell at getting Denver or Colorado Springs?

He reminds me every time I whine and complain which is almost daily. Got him on the phone now, he says hello. how you doing in the down under?

Thank you gentleman, I appreciate the info.

I went through an interview last week and they said the first available EMB class will be March 28th. If you want the jet, I heard April or even May. It doesn't seem like they are very sure actually when class dates are for what. I just got a conditional offer today and it was to fly the CRJ. So now I'm all confused. Still waiting on to hear about a class date.

Couple more questions: can reserves pick up open time on days off?
