SkyWest Hiring FOs

:laff: It was before that.

As a CFI we had a very cheap health plan that did NOT cover pregnancies etc. Needless to say we had no plans for any new kids. Over time we had saved up money to help us through the first year at a regional. A little here and there, parts of tax return $$ etc. (Almost $5000 worth when all was said and done.)

So what happens? Naturally we beat the birth control pill odds 99.4 % or whatever it is, and my son, now six, was born during the first week of training, before health benefits kicked in. We paid for all of it. (It cost over $5000) I wouldn't trade him for anything, but it was an "unforseen" expense at the time. :D

How much? I have about $10k, which I'm hoping would be enough.

I realize I am speaking in generalizations here, but I think the average person, assuming you did not have a HUGE student loan debt payment, could PROBABLY stretch 10K, plus first year pay and make ends meet without incurring much extra debt.

Good to know, thanks. I have no debt, so that would obviously help. Still, what a tough decision that would be...

No debt and 10k in savings? That is a great situation to be in. Unless you have 3 kids with 3 different mommas and pay child support and alimony, I don't see how first year pay could be a problem at all. Being a CFI I felt like I hit the lottery when I locked in a job that guarantees 30k/year.

Remember the only thing you have to pay taxes on will be your base pay and the way things are going you could very well break guarantee and even hold a line by the end of the year.

Well, it seems that they're making calls.

I just got a call yesterday. They told me to apply via AirlineApps and to call them back once I did so. I really hate airlineapps.. really!

Does anyone know if the interview is still the same as a few years back?

Thanks.

Note: I applied a few months back via their website. Times are about 3100/320.

Hey. What is a good number or email to get a hold of somebody there? I applied through their site and airlineapps but nothing.

Thanks

So a few more loaded questions...

I'm not sure how many SKW plans on hiring onto the Bro over the next few months or year. Anyone know? I guess FAT is the junior base. Would a line there be many months away or might it be quick? How senior is SBP/SMX? I like that area, but I know its pretty pricey. Do most commuters try and get LAX since that is obviously a much more commutable base? If offered the position, I'm not sure if I'll try and move or just stay at home and commute. And can anyone give me a gist of how reserve works over there? Being 3 years on rsv at my current airline, I'm pretty much use to it and I know it sucks. But just wondering if there's long call, short call, airport reserve, etc.

I know its hard to say how long it will be to hold a line, but any wag at it is good enough for me. And just trying to decide if jumping ship is the right thing to do.

Probably didn't get hired Jan 1st, and just looked at the W2?

True, I started new hire ground on JAN 7 not Jan 1 so a week difference, finished IOE in time to bid for March, had a line in FAT for March, April,May, June then went to perma reserve in SLC for the rest of 08 all of 09 and 10 months of 2010. My W2 from first year shows 17,405.38 second year 23,704.38 and last year 26,421.82 big money, livin the dream, tfayd, any questions?

23k the second year!... i thought it would be more for some reason.... Thanks for sharing the info, it really is helpful

Ok, one question, could you have made more if you wanted to?

I can sort of answer that--it totally depends on if you transition to the CRJ. 2nd yr on the jet you can plan for at least $35,000 a year with more possible. Stuck on the EMB, Newty's numbers are very accurate.

:yeahthat: Second year CAN be much more $$ than 23K, but recent history has shown that it is not always the case. IF things are moving then you will do OK second year. I've known guys that make it to the RJ and hold a line, second year, that hit 40K on average. For many of us the second year really was a big difference pay wise, but when the economy ground to a halt people got stuck. The lowest guys on the totem pole had a rough time. I'm sure they did everywhere in the regional world.

Newty is a poster child. . . .a very tall poster child, for a worst case scenario: stuck in the right seat of the lowest paying airplane for YEARS, while on reserve. BTW I've been really impressed with our low senority F/O's . . for that matter F/O's at any airline who stuck it out for these last few years on reserve. What is even more amazing is that most of them kept their chins up and carried a decent attitude during that time.

At least here it is easier for a line holder to make more $$ in any seat than a guy on reserve. ---- They will usually credit more each month than a reserve pilot. On the EMB it is at least 5 more hours. Generally line holders have an easier time picking up extra trips from open time as they have a few more days off each month than a reserve. Also more per diem with each pay check. Yes I know, we are not supposed to count that, but for a regional F/O it can add up to an extra few hundred bones each month.

Thanks for explaining it. I'm also guessing that the starting pay wasn't 22/hr a couple years ago.

I know it's splitting hairs, but I'm in a place where I'm trying to figure out a budget that seems somewhat plausible to live as a first year F/O. Thanks for the honest replies.
