Phraseology Nazis

why do we all care so much about what other pilots say on the radio? I mean, at a non-towered field it can be annoying, but other than that, who the heck cares if a southwest crew says 3.5 instead of tree thousand fife hundred?

What difference does it make if you call 'em in sight anyway? I thought that they couldn't use visual separation in Class A airspace? Am I remembering that incorrectly?

there is a rule that allows enroute controllers to use visual seperation in class A, its a very narrow rule only for opposite courses. but there are so many steps envolved that its not worth the time and effort.

Yeah by the time the steps are completed they are 5 miles apart anyways.

yes because everyone is IFR, right? visual separation is only used between VFR aircraft, or a VFR and an IFR, or 2 IFR's on a visual approach.

Visual/Blind for the former; Tally/No Joy for the latter.

Or for cones like me, generally just Blind and No Joy :)

Other friend making phrases I like include "in the box", "with the numbers" (who needs to listen to ATIS anyway, right?), "adjusting gross weight", "with the flash", and of course, there is no better way to let everyone know that you are a fighter pilot than "radar contact"....

Well, then I learned something new today!

As a controller. Man o man I wish I could say maintain TCAS separation :laff:

I don't care if you say with you leaving x point y for z, just don't tell me you see em on TCAS, TIS or the Fishfinder. From a real life blood and guts standpoint, I either told someone else what altitude to climb you to or its written down and I already know. All I need to get is what altitude you're at right now to validate your mode C. Tell me you have them ::Blocked by the other 12 frequencies I'm working:: Oh boy, this is going to be fun... "Do you have xzy in sight?" "I've got em ::blocked ad nauseum:: That said, if your job is to teach, teach the right way. Blocking a freq to finger wag is childish though.

To some others. You can maintain visual from an aircraft you're following on an ILS or a parallel. That will let you come in tighter since we aren't having to worry about wake or tightly spaced runways. Its called get down and look around! The TRACON loves visual ladies and gentleman. Just don't say you can when you know you won't be able to continue due to a low deck. It isn't just visual approach or in the VMC visual can work.
