Zapp Blows SWA Interview: Story at 11.

Hey man, their loss, no worries.

One thing I always say in my letters of recommendation is that we need to get ahold of (candidate) before our competition does. :)

I could've sworn that mine said "...over my dead body!" or something along those lines.

There are days when i hear SW pilots over Frequency and wonder how did they get hired?

Now take it that as a positive or Pejorative connotation.

Oh, every airline can say that.

I followed in a Delta Airbus 330 across the Atlantic and on London Control, Shanwick Oceanic, Gander Oceanic, Gander Center, Moncton Center, Boston and New York:

"Aaaaaand Deltaaaaaaaah's XXXXXX checkin in with ya onboard at three-five-OH"

Checkin in with ya onboard? What.... The.... HELL.

Plural?

The Aaaaaaaand?!?!

They showed you that? What the hell! :)

Actually that's what you sent to me when I asked for a reference, but that was the best I got from anybody so I went ahead and used it as my sole letter of recommendation anyway.

Southwest does do it better though. One guy had a stuck mic in the queue at Denver one night:

"We gots six [expletive] jets lined up waitin' on a got damn [expletive] metroliner to land!"

Wanna get away?

Sounds like a valid concern and a correct explanation of the situation to me.

If it was a Beech 1900 it wouldn't have been in anyones way.

Lies! A metro will get you there faster and more efficiently. Plus you'd here it coming from miles away! Those SWA guys should have been in awe that such a magnificent piece of machinery graced their presence! Especially since it was one of the best commuter aircraft....industry leading really. :)

Metro is more efficient? Is that code for "it's underpowered"? The 1900 is only built better and easier to fly, almost like someone intended the thing to fly. 1900 would have been 248kts to 2.8nm.

I got turned down by two majors before getting hired. I was devastated to get turned down by CAL. You just have to keep plugging along. Looking back on it I can't imagine going through the whole process of making it as an airline pilot. I just chalk it up to being young at the time and having a different outlook and attitude. Oh..to be young again...haha.

Zap, while you are terribly disappointed, you are seeing the bright side, and the positive side, in this. You still have a career worthy job going for you. That's huge.

Well said DE727. You just have to keep plugging a long and look for the positives. Everything in my career has happened for a reason. So far God has done me well and only years later I look back on jobs I didn't get and see what a disaster it would have been had I gotten them.

Getting called a lone for an interview is impressive among the competition you were up against.

This is my last comment of the "off" topic. The last few weeks I've been flying the metro direct from MIA to BED. It took between 4.3 and 4.4hrs. The hondy couldn't do that flight in that time without making a fuel stop. The metro burns less than 600lbs an hour total in cruise in the 20's. It's duration is over 7hrs. It's more efficient. :)

Again. It was good on you even getting an interview Zapp. One of my buddies did a phone interview with your current company a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know you guys were hiring!

That's about what the BE-350 burns, too...does the 1900 burn much more than that?

Are we talking per side? :)

Besides, personally I feel the topic should be changed. Self deprecation is the appetizer of charm, and Zap is a humble man. I would say again that this is Southwest's loss, and the topic should be changed to just that.

Zap's a great guy, I have tremendous respect for him, and I agree with the sentiments across the board that he is truly 1 out of 7000.

Every company, including Southwest, admits that 10% of the guys they hired they shouldn't have, and 10% of the guys the let go they should have hired. 80% is real life. I have to believe interview 2 will be a resounding success.

That's bad, because that means at least two, if not all of them were doing it. Unless the jackhole disn't take a rest break.

Might have been one of those "I always take the middle break" captains I keep hearing about. Aye yi yi....

I flew with one of those. I scheduled him on third break anyway. He took it, but wasn't happy. The other FO, who was fNWA was loving it!
