Zapp Blows SWA Interview: Story at 11.

ZapBrannigan

If it ain’t a Boeing, I’m not going. No choice.
Good morning everyone,

I wanted to share with all of you that I wasrecently invited to interview at Southwest Airlines. If the internet speculation is correct over 7000 people applied, a few hundred were invited to interview and, ultimately, they will have hired about 100. Unfortunately, I have received word that I was not selected. :(

I spent several months studying and preparing for the interview, reading "Nuts" (several times) and polishing up to interview for the first time in around 7 years. I went in feeling confident and well prepared -- so, although I am dissapointed in myself, I am comfortable in the knowledge that I did my best and that there were other candidates who were either better qualified, who presented themselves better, or were just a better fit. I'm ok with it. The men and women I interviewed with were terrific people and SWA will be fortunate to have hired any one of them.

The experience in Dallas was terrific. They treated all of us extremely well. The interview was laid back and comfortable... more like hangar flying than an actual "interview".

So for now, I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I still have a great job as a corporate pilot with a terrific company. I make a fair wage and am able to support my family. I was not desperate for a job, or needing to put food on the table. I went to the interview as much to interview them... as to have them interview me and I was not dissapointed by what I saw. SWA is a fantastic company and I can see why it has become the gold standard for airline pilot job-seekers.

I share this with you guys today because, well many of you have become good friends over the year and in a way JC seems like an extended family of sorts. But also because part of "pay it forward" is sharing both the good times and the bad in the industry. Talking about how we deal with those highs and lows, how it makes us feel, and what our plans are to move forward in a career that is seldom "stable".

There is a sense of relief after an interview is over and the months of preparation and worrying have come to a close. Even finding out I wasn't selected is in some small way a relief... I wont have to cancel summer vacations or miss my son's birthday due to initial. I think it takes guts to apply and to interview somewhere. The longer you work in a place the more comfortable you become and the harder it is to consider the alternative -- especially if that alternative includes less pay, commutes, and other intrusions on work/life balance. I felt -- and I still feel -- that in this case it would have been worthwhile. I sincerely appreciate SWA for inviting me to interview, and all of my friends on JC and in the "real world" who thought highly enough of me to write letters of recommendation on my behalf. I am honored and humbled by their friendship.

Congrat's on being one that was selected. That alone speaks volumes about what you had to offer.

Great write up Zap. Congrats on the interview opportunity and SWA blew it. FedEx is a cooler job anyway. I'd rather you go there so you can give me a rec someday - cause I don't want to fly people.

After one year you can reapply. Thanks for the congrats everyone. Makes it sting a little less. lol

Zap-
Huuuuge congrats on being invited to the interview! That alone says a lot about your qualifications as a pilot and a person. As others have said, it's SWA's loss. I guess this time around it just wasn't meant to be.

Even getting a shot at an interview shows that you were a worthy candidate! Great job Zap!

I got turned down by two majors before getting hired. I was devastated to get turned down by CAL. You just have to keep plugging along. Looking back on it I can't imagine going through the whole process of making it as an airline pilot. I just chalk it up to being young at the time and having a different outlook and attitude. Oh..to be young again...haha.

Zap, while you are terribly disappointed, you are seeing the bright side, and the positive side, in this. You still have a career worthy job going for you. That's huge.

Zap, thanks for the write up! Are you going to be re-applying if the opportunity arises? After talking with several SWA pilots, I guess it is not unusual people to interview several times before getting hired.

I will probably apply again. Who knows whether they'll give me the shot to interview again. I know quite a few pilots who reapplied during this window (and who had interviewed and been rejected a few years back) but were not offered an interview this time...

Zap,

Things () happens for a reason. Chalk this up as their loss, something I honestly believe especially if half of what Julie, aka Hoople, H. says about you is half true, SWA lost a chance at a stellar employee.

While SWA is, right now, the place to be you know as well as anyone what the airline world is like and what the lifestyle is like. You have a good job and are the big cheese. Embrace what you have and don't let SWA's mistake get you down. There are plenty of other better jobs out there that I believe will be coming available shortly that you will be more than qualified for.

Good luck, keep the chin up, there are a hell of a lot worse things in the world than getting told no by SWA.

I can't believe they passed up on someone with such a broad experience base; and who has a good personality; and is customer oriented. Their loss.

On the other hand, it IS past the "Date of Constructive Notice". May be a blessing in disguise.

It might not be my place, but in Zap's defense, he did get hired by 2 majors before when times were thin.

As far as I know, this is the first interview where he wasn't offered a job. I know my place of employ would be thankful to have someone of his experience.

Not the first one. I was turned down by Continental Express in 1996, and by Colgan and Great Plains in 2002. It's been 7 years since I last interviewed. I was pretty rusty. :(

Hey man, their loss, no worries.

One thing I always say in my letters of recommendation is that we need to get ahold of (candidate) before our competition does. :)
