That and the communication issues that should have been figured out 3 years ago should sum it up.

You on the L-XJT side? Right?
I am more than happy to highlight some of the internal issues that have caused these failures.
When you cut off your communication committee's ability to contribute to the "communications" related to negotiations, you're gonna get a pilot group that isn't satisfied with what you're selling them.
On the L-ASA side I released a communication survey late last fall. The results were encouraging, at least to me and my counterpart.
Those who participated highlighted that we (ASA Comm Committee) were doing great communicating to our pilots with regards to safety, scheduling, contract infringement, reserve questions, deadhead issues, pay errors, etc., but those who participated expressed a high level of dissatisfaction with the frequency and content of communications (JNC Update) regarding negotiations. Of course, I imagine most members of even our MEC recall there being a survey, much less care to hear our findings. Some folks are not too receptive to being told their perceptions are incorrect.
Over the past three years we (as a committee) tried very hard to provide assistance and have, regularly, been kept out of the process. Those bad seeds, planted by failed leadership (and perhaps too many lawyers worrying about minimizing risk vs. open, transparent, and honest dialogue with constituents) grew a poor communication crop that finally poisoned a pilot group yielding a loss of credibility and reputation.
I am not terribly optimistic that any of that will change going forward. I think that with some new visions, new people in leadership positions, and an acceptance that things have been executed poorly by those on their way out, the page can turn and those of us with professional communication skills can contribute positively to improve things rather than being mothballed and placed on the shelf.
What is amazing to me though (as a communication strategist) is that both pilot groups have come together, unified for a brighter future - largely centered around the power of social media. Your voices were heard once, make them heard again. This Union is YOURS, take ownership in it. Without your voice, those you elect will be free to run things how they see fit. Speak up.
