X-Jet Emergency

Oh, I love the media....I know that there have been several posts about stupid comments that were made, these were a few of my favorites from our local news station here in Houston:

"The EMD-145 holds about 10,000 gallons of fuel and burns it at about 3,000 gallons an hour" HAHAHA

"After a landing like that, this pilot should get to graduate up to the 'big planes"

"The pilot now has to make a belly landing"

"They changed from Runway 9 to Runway 15L, which will give him a much nicer tailwind...."

"They have a little switch for the apu...but it doesn't burn any fuel, it's a little generator that burns a little fuel..."

From the master of aviation...John King, "They are probably weighing the option of flying out and dumping some fuel over the gulf...." I knew I was wasting time watching those videos when I was a student pilot.

DRUMMROLLLLL....and my top favorite....

"The tower is now telling the pilots what to do next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Oh well, a little humor for us pilots during a definite nail-biting time...the crew did outstanding and I hope and pray that each of us could have done the same in that situation. NICE JOB!

I REALLY wish that they would be compensated, but I imagine the best those pilots can expect is a letter of commendation from the chief pilot.

To think otherwise IMO is just crazy......

quote from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

"I want to commend the crew of flight 3161 for handling this difficult situation with the utmost in professionalism and ensuring the passengers safety," said ExpressJet President and CEO Jim Ream. ExpressJet Airlines Inc. operated the flight.

I actually never really thought of that, but this is the same logic that I use for firefighters. Why should firefighters get everything that they get, when in reality, going in to fires, burning buildings etc. is the job in which they signed on to do, fully knowing what can happen. In fact, that is the reason that many become firefighters because they love that adrenaline rush they get when they work (plus, most of the pay doesnt hurt either). It's a pretty screwy system when you think about it (IMHO)

Same thought process I had when 9/11 occurred and the subsequent monetary outlays presented to survivors. Should I have been upset at the media hype given to those individuals and the compensation provided to the NYPD and NYFD familes when I watched souls KIA'd in Vietnam, Somolia, and other areas, as part of military conflicts. Their families received flag draped caskets and the normal insurance policy. Yes . . .it was their jobs; they were trained to perform their job, and when things got heated, they were willing to risk themselves to safe both the lives of citizens and themselves alike. Some succeeded; some failed.

MSNBC interviewed Arthur Alan Wolk, the SATAN of aviation attorneys.

Careful. This is the guy (and he is Satan) that caused the AvWeb forums to be shut down after he was called names there.

Really. Well what a nice notch in his belt then :sarcasm:

Oh man you ain't kiddin'!

Headline"news" "followed" that story for a good hour (or so it seemed).

I was in a bar with a friend, and he and the guy next to him were all like, "OMG, how are they going to land with one wheel."

I then explained to them that they land on one wheel all the time...it's called a crosswind landing.

It was then a non-event. It's amazing how uneducated people are and how the media takes advantage of that.
