Woman claims Southwest Airlines worker discriminated against her (another Fattie)

The ignorance displayed in this thread amazes me ('cept for our resident •tard Chris Ford, I expect it from him anymore).

Thanks for the kind words. So what exactly was ignorance... That it's unhealthy to be obese? That fat pride is along the lines of smoking pride or crackuser pride? That it's uncomfortable when someone's fat rolls over into a seat that YOU paid for?

My problem isn't with the "overweight" crowd, it's with the "obese" crowd. Especially those who are particularly proud of being "large and in charge" There's absolutely no reason for someone to get to that point (as demonstrated by the previous post about the hyperactive thyroid problem was overcome), and even once they get to that point, to just give up on the prospect of losing weight demonstrates that one is a lazy individual. If Jared could lose substantial weight by walking to Subway and eating one of 6 sandwiches with 6 grams of fat or less, anyone can... Or the woman who was 1200 lbs and thinned herself down to something like 200, starting off by watching Richard Simmons videos and clapping along, enough to get her heart rate up to burn calories? You hear these success stories, what's stopping people from just trying....

As for the "discrimination".... Should we all be nice to crackhos too? They're abusing their bodies as well, I guess we shouldn't look down on them. It might be genetic. I guess it'd be discrimination to make fun of someone for wearing an ugly shirt too, even though it's something that can be changed.

But Aloft, feel free not to respond, just throw out some topic sentence, call people names, and don't provide any proof/insight as to how you got there.

Lloyd and Max, it wasn't too long ago that people of your heritage had trouble getting a drink of water without being hassled. Max, people of your persuasion are still hassled daily. What if enough customers complained about blacks or gay people being on their flight? What if SWA decided to charge you extra simply for being black or gay? While they'd have a serious legal problem on their hands for racial discrimination, it's still open season on homosexuals in this country (and for that matter, most others on the planet), and SWA could very likely get away with a "queer surcharge" for you're simply not a protected class.

I also debate the point that when you buy a ticket, you're merely leasing x number of cubic inches/feet for the duration of the flight. If this were the case, overbooking would be illegal since you've leased that space whether you're in it or not. On the contrary, what the air carriers sell is carriage--that is, transport of an individual from point to point.

I'd be interested to learn how many SWA pax have sued over this COS policy, and what the outcomes of those suits were.

Looking...looking...in my 5 now 6 post in this thread I'm trying to find when and where I or Llyod came off as saying something either ignorant or insensitive toward people who are large or heavy set. If your simply making a point that blacks and gays are or have fought for their right to equal freedoms & protections then okay I can see you using that reference. But if your somehow saying that either I or Lloyd said something of ill will toward large people Matt I'm not seeing it.

Not to mention the completely invalid comparison of discrimination, because I don't see separate schools, water fountains, restaraunts, etc etc etc. and for the comparison of discrimination of homosexuals, I don't see people going around saying that "God hates fatties" or killing people because of their weight.

By making those comparisons, you denegrate the efforts put forward by those faced by true discrimination in order to remedy their situation. Being made fun of is hardly discrimination, especially if it's something that can be changed.

What's that got to do with the price of tea in China?

Look, you've got someone who takes up two seats. They should pay for them. Nothing more than that.

Discrimination? Hardly. It's just like charging you for two beers if you drink two beers, and one if you drink one.

Are there spicy bufallo wings and NTN there? I'm down!

:)

Anyone who disagrees with SWA policy should go fly on a 4 hour trip sittig with a 400 pound mans flesh blanket draped over them. It really is horrible. I felt bad for the man and even worse for myself. I would have been willing to buy myself an extra ticket on that flight!

The sad part is she will probably win this case, and even if she doesn't she will of cost SWA a load of money in legal fees just trying to defend their case.

The US needs so much tort reform it's not even funny. It will be the downfall of the United States as we know it, IMO.

I think you're missing the point. This case is a civil rights case.

This case is a civil rights case.

The above is understood. I believe those who have responded recognize her right to be larger-than-large. As does Southwest Airlines. I don't believe the airline has an issue with her right to be large ... but it does take issue with managing the comfortability and safety of its paying passengers.

If she has issue with the policy, she has the right to lose weight, fit comfortably in one seat, and pay for one seat.

Now I'm not commenting on the details as to how SWA handled the situation, just the larger, "civil rights" issue.

Since when does being overweight become a civil rights issue?
Her claim, as I read it, is not that it is fattie discrimination, but that she (as a black fattie) was treated worse than a white fattie would have been. If she actually can prove that white fatties were treated better than black fatties by SW, that's race discrimination and actionable under federal law.

Wanted to make this a BOLD STATEMENT. Don't know how to make the term "flesh blanket" in bold though.
Absolutely hilarious.
She should have to pay for two seats. End of discussion. I think we are all in agreement here. I think she may be pulling the race card though as far as her being treated worse than a "white fattie".
She would have never brought about the suit had she not been charged for two seats.
Tell her to take her flesh blanket and shut her soup cooler.
Pissed off!

So ahh...guys? I'm the complete opposite of everything you're talking about.

I swam for 8 years, 4 years doing club 4 years doing my high schools swim team. I would swim 3 hours a day, 5 days a week for a few months. Know how much weight I lost? Zero pounds. Know how much weight I put on from muscle mass? Zero pounds.

Now I sit at home, eat twinkies all day long, drink as much beer as I possibly can and I can't bust 155 lbs. if I bust ass trying (I'm 5'10" BTW).

So there's a shot in the "if you work out enough you can change your body" argument.

Your pastely pale too...:) If you want to bulk up do what I did and eat lots of protein (don't even go there people) Chicken & beef really help. But you gotta eat it in a good supply.

Ah the protein muscle men thing huh?
I work with a few people who are avid body builders. They eat turkey and steak all the time at work. One guy would eat like 4-5 turkey sandwiches during a 12 hr shift.
He did gain muscle mass and thinned out quite a bit.
So yeah, fatties start working out!
I am a lazy skinny bastard, pale too. I am fortunate that all my life I have had a high metabolism, slows the older I get. I do gain a bicycle inner tube around my waist when I gorge eating out.
USMC days: gained 15 pounds of pure muscles. Ooooh Rah!
That evaporated soon after boot camp. I didn't have someone making me exercise practically all day long anymore.
Rant off.

LMFAO!!!
I knew sooner or later you would chime in on that.
Aye sir!
One, two, three, ONE!
One, two, three, TWO!
ok, im tired. must rest...
phew.

Uhhhh....Be very careful what you axe for my Left-Winged brotha. In high school AND college, I was a frreakin' RAIL!

Graduated HS at 6'3" and about 155 lbs. - not exaggerating.

Played football for a year in college at the same height and a whopping 175 which bulked up to 190.

I couldn't break 200 (didnt want to either) for the next DECADE! NOW..... I long for the days when I could even SEE 200!!! I'm 225 now and it's mostly in my gut. I was 210 when my son was born. Then, I ran, ate well for the most part, and tried to stay active - Since then, with instructing and a toddler at home -know how much I've I've GAINED???? 15 lbs.

Started running again a few weeks ago and STILL haven't lost a friggin' pound.

That said - When I was your age/weight range - I could sit on my butt, eat crap and LOSE weight. Ain't true no mo bro. ;)

Be careful. :nana2:
