Why not the airlines!?!?!?!?

Inverted

mmmmmm wine
In a completely unrelated series of events, I have a bloody nose from banging my head against the wall...

"I like that I can take my drone with me"

I saw this video referenced in another thread. I don't really get all the grar! on this, but I'm not a professional pilot so from the outside looking in, this doesn't seem particularly....problematic....to me.

If the goal of that video is to prove how much more glamorous his life is than an airline pilot's, I'm not seeing it. I'm also skeptical he's making nearly as much as a comparable Big 4 pilot is.

He works for a company that requires 6 month contracts for recurrent. The poor guy is grossly ignorant to the industry. And no he doesn't make what an airline pilot makes.

Problematic? Ehh. It just reeks of insecurity to me. If you like what you do and you're satisfied with it, who cares what anyone else thinks?

What are the odds Delta takes him with no 121 experience? Curiously asking....

The better question to ask is, what are the odds Delta takes him when he barely updates his app, and 10,000 obsessive, dedicated, and well qualified pilots are updating every 2 weeks.

Yeah, the video is legitimately meh, but for a new dude on the block the airline vs corporate is worth some thought process, pros/cons list and all that

My limited experience is with a jet management company where I flew few different things with different captains and being the hired pro help in the right seat for a private owner operator.

I do have the extensive laundry list of what I liked and disliked at both and what I would and would not want to see in my future. I have the same kind of a list of second hand knowledge for the regional airlines, have my first and second choice at those and all that.

At this point in my life I can't say that going either corporate or airline would be so overwhelmingly better that it's a clear cut choice.

And it wasn't just the general public....

Back in the day when I was a newly branded B727 f/o, I flew a trip to MCI or ICT (can't remember exactly). What I do remember is my entire crew being under the age of 30. The Capt was 29 and the engineer and myself were mid 20's.

After arriving at our destination early one morning we were picked up by the hotel van. There was already a red-eye Braniff 2 crew on the van (2 pilots and 3 FA's). After exchanging a few pleasantries we took our seat. One of the female FA's looked to be in her late 40's-early 50's. After a short period of time she spoke up and started asking my Capt questions.

Her: UPS has airplanes?

Capt: Yep, 727's, 757's, DC8's and 747's.

Her: What did y'all fly in?

Capt: 727

Her: Ya'll look kinda young to be flying that! My boyfriend is working on his Private pilot's license...did ya'll have to have a multi-engine rating to get on with UPS?

(Now, keep in mind I'm sitting right next to her Capt who is now turned away, looking out his side window and quietly tearing up and chuckling as I can see from the reflection in his window).

Capt: (Now in a deep eastern Kentucky Jethro Bodine country draw..). Wa heeell, no! I still don't have one of them there "multi-engine aeroplane ratings" cause every time they failed an engine on me that ole’ thing just rolled over on it's back and we'd crash and get ole’ kill'ed...or worse! I'm gonna try again and get one of those I-F-R cloud ratings first and then take my test for my multi engine aeroplane ratings! When I get'em all I'm gonna go fly for an real airline!

(At this point her Capt just busted up laughing, looked at my Capt and apologized profusely for her noob questions. We all thought it was pretty funny and got a good laugh but that mentality is still alive and well even today.

BTW...as we walked into the hotel I remember her Capt asking us where he could send in his Resume.

FWIW it seems like he has a pretty mellow 135/91 job. At my 91 job I did tons of extra stuff he didn't have to do. Plus he didn't really address much of the issues I had with 135 and 91. Like:

-SOP/Safety. Do they use SOPs or have a safety culture.
-Schedule. What is his schedule? Does he have one.
-Duty limits. Are there any if its 91? If its 135 and 91 do they just add a bunch of extra stuff after the 135 is over and call it 91
-Pay. After negotiating pay for quite a few large cabin jobs. I highly doubt he is making what a 5 year captain is a an ULCC not to mention anything better in the 121 world.
-Family life. I'm also willing to be the guy is single. He doesn't have kids. Once that happens. Its not so easy to deny how much better life is at even the regionals.

Other than not being based where I'd like to be I'm loving the regionals. I have only flown one trip since IOE and I've spent a whole month just hanging out with my wife and son. The pay isn't great but for amount of work it's actually really good.

Also I just scrolled along until he was talking. The rest of the video is boring. I want my 2 or 3 minutes back.
