Which regional and why... ?

Well, Siver seemed to work out well for Gulley:
  • Florida base
  • Mostly kick-ass overnights, in places you might actually want to go
  • Two types in less than a year
  • Essentially the same crappy pay as elsewhere
  • Didn't manage to piss off too many people :)
  • Off to better things in less than a year
Set your expectations appropriately - that it is a job to get your foot in the door and move to something else, and not something to do only for money, and there are some good options out there. Particularly if you understand the plan isn't to be there long, and be ready to move.
But like I said its all a crapshoot.

I know a guy hired by Silver last July in the 1900. He's still on reserve. He will be nowhere near ATP mins come August and he had to relocate to BFE Pennsylvania for the job.

For some people the timing works out and everything is gravy. It's just trying to figure out how to be one of those people...

Well, why are Republic newhires tripping over themselves to fly the 170 but the airline can't fill a class for the Q or the 145?
From an outsiders perspective, personally I wouldn't want to fly the smaller/louder/slower aircraft. The 170 is a pretty nice plane and does some nice long legs (easy work).

Same reason why the senior guys typically are doing the international stuff vs the 4-5 leg domestic days...

If I chose to go to a regional it would most likely be one of these 3:

Silver (if I could get a FL base... I like it here)
Horizon (I like all of the bases and if I was in a position to move, I would consider them)
Skywest (same reasons as Horizon)

I've met them.
Well out them and make them feel like morons.

I've met 2 Skywest pilots who have actually used the term "mainline" to describe Skywest, but I don't lable the whole group like pilotdude did above.

I've met a bunch. In my short 6yrs, I can still say the number of those that think they are somehow better than the rest of us, despite the vast differences in W-2s, is still drastic. Maybe it's not actually the case but there for a while, they were turning out guys with some major SJS. The CHQ guys, however, couldn't be any nicer.

I've always taken Skywest "mainline" to mean that they're the most favorite child within the Inc family, not that they're actually mainline. For past examples, see Colgan Express (1900's) vs. Colgan Mainline (Saab's).

I enjoy running into those guys, that way I instantly know who the douchebag is.

There's always going to be that 5%, but almost everybody I've met at every pilot group is pretty cool and just trying to do their thing. Those than instantly label an entire pilot group due to a couple of tools need to take a good long look in the mirror.

Very well said.

At any rate, the regionals are a moving target. I've had good QOL so far but that all could change tomorrow. New hires are holding lines within a month after training. I now have 500 people under me after 1 year with over half of the month off. The pay is sub-par but overall, life is good.

...and then before you know it, integration, pay cuts, and back to reserve.

Good luck on a FL base within 2 years.

How Republic manages to get pilots in the door blows my mind. Come to Eagle.... i could always use more guys junior to me :)

They have a professional atmosphere when you interview, good intro, etc. I'm sure the bonus plays some part for the E170 but that HR department started treating me poorly before I even started. I won't go into it but when I got the chance with another, AWAC, I bolted.

Please for the love of all that is holy don't ever be the guy who says "we'll follow the RJ" referencing the E170. Please.

I tried that once recently and I ended up sitting ready reserve every day, then displaced, then furloughed while your coworkers picked up OT. That is why I ended up at Republic.

So if ATC says follow the "RJ" what shall we say? ;)
They don't ever say that. They say follow the Embraer (sp?). People get cute and think they are funny and say "we'll follow the RJ". It's stupid. It serves no purpose. Most of all unprofessional.

I will say I heard it once. In PVD. We were behind an Airways 190 and the tower did say follow the RJ. I could hear the guys cringe from back in our RJ...I just said "roger".

Yeah, who cares what they call it? The type on my ATP says ERJ 170/190, so I guess it's an RJ. All I care about is that I'm not at a regional anymore. If JetBlue paid me to fly Cessna 172s, I would be all over it.

That being said, I do have some buddies that can't wait to get to the A320 so they won't be flying "RJs" anymore.

FYI- at Atlas they call the 767 a "light twin." Everything's relative, folks!
