My QOL in base is orders of magnitude higher than my commuting coworkers. My nights away from home last month - 6. The commuters - probably 16-19.
I will not take a job that I can't move to my base. I plain refuse to commute by anything but car.... or maybe GA, which means car is possible. That said I'd maybe do it for up to a year for the right job if it wasn't possible to live there (NYC).

I've found all sides of town to be surprisingly crappy. Lower hillside, south anchorage for example; neighbor is a drug dealer and frequently has angry people "visit" on Saturday mornings around 2am.
