Depends on the school district. Here in Nashville, it's pretty easy. If you have a 4-year degree and you've never pushed up on any minors, you're a shoe-in.

Of course, it helps if you can talk about more than just airplanes....

To substitute teach in most counties in Florida, you pretty much need a bachelor's degree in anything and that's it. You have to go through a background check, fingerpringting, etc. but as long as you haven't committed any crimes (aside from traffic tickets) you're in. It pays $75-80 a day.

How quickly are the schools growing down there ?? I'm about to finish up my master's in Ed... with undergrad in Marketing (minors: history/geography)... do schools at all require certification to even sub ?

What about being a designated examiner (DE)? The two DE's at my flight school are both airline captains and do checkrides on the side. $350 a few hours' work isn't too bad, but I understand it can be kind of political (but what job isn't?).

Its kind of tough to get into. I know a guy who's been trying to for a couple of years.

I've been trying for DE for 4 years. I'm technically already one, just not assigned to any FSDO so I can't practice.

The hard part is getting assigned to a FSDO near you.

You don't need certification to sub, but you do have to get yourself into the sub system at whatever county you want to work in. Sometimes it takes a while, and you have to annoy them. Some counties make you go to a class on a Saturday or something. The schools are usually in need of subs. I live in Orlando, and I know that the schools here need subs virtually every day.

I think a good part time job would be to teach meteorology. When I attended an Aviation Weather class at the college i was going to, our teacher was a military pilot and had been a weather-man. His real-life experience from being both a pilot and weather-man made the class very easy to learn and interesting.

If you ask me if I remember anything from that class, all I know is that clouds are puffy and white

j/k he did an excellent job. Of course you have to get your teaching certs, but it's something to do.

Like some have mentioned before, I heard real estate is the #1 second careers of airline pilots (did that make any sense?). I am taking the real estate principles course right now and pplan to take the test in the next couple of months. I wouldnt mind substitute teaching either.

What about being a plasma donor? I hear you get like 200 bucks a pop.

Plasma donation might have some adverse health effects short term (like blood donation does) so the airline might frown on that. I think substitute teaching, waiting tables, and real estate are probably the most common things to do ... certainly they're among the most schedule-friendly. Like John said, e-commerce could be good too ... something you could check in on with the laptop from the layover hotel. But that might be a harder nut to crack.

I might have to look in to subbing when I get to Houston to supplement that first-year pay and help make rent!!

Actually, I've got family in the funeral business. I don't know what the biz is called, but it might be C.B. Taylor or sometihng like that in Chicago.

I know of at least 4 NWA pilots who also are lawyers on the side (or are they lawyers who are also pilots on the side??).
