what\'s a good 2nd profession as well as piloting...

I did a search and it looks like this hasn't been addressed before because most of the threads deal with changing from a certain office profession to pilot... but just off the wall - what would be a good 2nd job/profession/business for a pilot that's wants to continue working as a pilot?

I've always thought about what i'd do as a 2nd career - but i have a desk job, so the switch or addition would be easier and I just wonder what other pilots would do if they wanted something to do besides or in addition to being a pilot for a major airline. granted, a lot of schooling would be out because of schedule conflicts and that's where i think it gets difficult.. but i've got a little curious george in me tonight....so i figured i'd at least ask since this is what the site is for!

There are a few SWA FOs that are real estate on the side. I hear there are a lot of pilots at the regionals that wait tables, too.....

sorry dude....didn't mean to offend and not quite sure how I did...

See, this friend of mine (another pilot of course) has a degree in liberal arts and says he'd like to work on something besides aviation so he can cut his hours down some and spend more time with his family (wife & kids)... so he's not looking to get out of the profession altogether because wife & kids like benefits. he just thinks he's starting to burnout so he's looking for another avenue of making some good $$ outside of aviation, in his home town (here in phx) since he's pretty sure his liberal arts degree won't get him anywhere.

so that's the scoopage...

Ok I'll have to be diplomatic about this post ...

Good options I've seen for second careers.

Independent business owners, with a flexible schedule operation. This would include ecommerce and other internet operations.

Independent consultants. [/diplomacy mode]

Shop and Store owners (I know one guy who sells diamonds!!!)

Pizza Delivery (don't laugh - you can make more than $200 on a weekend night.)

Independent Real Estate agent (flexible schedule)

Sim or ground instructors (doesn't cut in to your hours so most airlines approve.)

I'll post more when I think of them.

Hey Kristie, I heard there's a guy in Florida looking to hire a pilot / independent consultant. He'd like to hire someone who's not looking to build time, but use flying skills in the furtherance of the consulting business. Let me know and I can PM you the guy's contact information.

[off-topic] John, send me your contact information, K?[/off-topic]

Firefighting.

Just as cool (if not cooler, so to speak) than flying.......

.....and the girls dig it.

In some areas, you can be a paid reserve police officer (a lot are volunteer). If it's a progressive department, you have full police powers and patrol with the full-timers.

Real Estate Appraisal.

Set your own hours, do as much or as little as you want.

I really like being an exotic dancer. Lots of extra cash, the women dig it (unfortunatetly, some of the men do too), and it is just so intellectually stimulating.

When I'm settled into my airline job, I'd like to be a new age guitarist on the side. (You think I'm kidding???

)

Believe it or not, the guys who play that are typically excellent musicians. I have some keyboard chops as well, so I'd throw in some cheesey silky synths ... I could rake in some decent dough. (Or not, but I'd love it, so who cares?) Hang out with the Kenny G's and the Yannis one week, fly the next.

Re: what\'s a good 2nd profession as well as piloting...

There are a great many pilots who are also exceptional musicians.

There were some guys at Eagle who had a band, nothing professional or anything, just a group of guys who like to play who got together and had a good time.

Along the lines of waiting tables, you could bartend. I knew a bartender who on a weekend night Fr-Sa-Su would make $400-$500 a night. Tons of money and you meet plenty of people

I've been trying to get a band started with some of the SWA rampers, but it just ain't happening. Either that or they like Coolio more than Rush, and that doesn't quite fit my agenda. My best friend is a drummer and a bigger Rush fan than me, but he's leaving soon.

Re: what\'s a good 2nd profession as well as piloting...

Hey, well if you head to New Mexico, Kell, I'll join you in a Rush-y band.

In high school, my longest-running band was the same kind of "progressive rock" that Rush was. Just without the synths.

You can come jam with our band up in Daytona. We also play down in the Winter Park area from time to time. We're looking for a lead guitar player.

I plan on supplementing my income by playing in a band/happy hours on my accoustic and substitute teaching.

Re: what\'s a good 2nd profession as well as piloting...

I heard a lot of pilots were substitute teachers on the side.. any particular major/minor we should have?

Thanks
