What to do....

I got the email telling me I have been chosen for further consideration(at 3:31 eastern time on 10/11). The only problem is it is ZME -- in TN. In my geographic preferences I only put FL (for pubnat2, for pubnat1 I put FL and GA) and listed my choices in order in the comments box (1st choice was ZMA -- miami center). I also chose the terminal or enroute option. I don't know where the hell they got TN from. But my question is, what happens if I turn this one down? How far back will that put me? I have applied to pubnat1,2,4,5,6 (only missed pubnat3). Also I scored an 87.3 on the AT-SAT.

You should seriously consider taking it. But if you feel you can't, expect a longer wait....remember the 2nd pepc for this pubnat is at the end of January... How long do you expect it to be before the pub 3 pepc's and remember...there is waiting after the pepc's for class dates and clearances.
Just my opinion.

Like a lot of others I have been a fan of this site for a long time but have not joined in on all of the action until only recently. Today I, too, received an e-mail informing me that "Congratulations! You have been chosen for further consideration for an Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) position at the Memphis Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZME) in Memphis, Tennessee." I am also conflicted here, being as my two geographic preferences were "New Hampshire" and "Oregon." New England and the Pacific Northwest are not exactly what I'd consider the South..or anywhere close to it now that I think of it. Another strange thing is that I chose the "terminal only" option. Something has got to be seriously wrong here. Doesn't it? I mean, I know that we are all at the mercy of the government and that what they say goes but come on...it's like they didn't even try.

Here's what is screwed up, I live maybe 45 miles from ZTL...yet there are people living hundreds of miles away, who selected TERMINAL only who got it, and GA was my first geographic preference. Like the rest of you, I ended up getting ZME. And I'll be turning 31 in Decemeber, so it is doubtful they'll even give me another shot at one of the other announcements down the line.

I'm going to have an uphill battle trying to convince my wife (any myself, for that matter) to move away from our family when we're already in our early 30s and will probably be trying to have a kid in the next 2-3 years.

Ill take your spot. Really I will!!!! I know you guys have lives, and other things going on but just be happy you were selected with a 87 when me with a commercial pilot certificate, and 1% lower score didnt get a email!!!!

Dont take anything i say to heart. I just hate my life right now HAHA!:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

try convincing a wife to move to alaska :)

Yeah, and the spread just keeps widening. PubNat 2 was rumored to have a PEPC in late November for LA, now we find out it is late January. I wouldn't be surprised if PubNat 3 has to wait until the middle of next year.

Obviously you're not married. If I were single, I would have taken it in a heartbeat.

LOL thank god! My plan is to not get married until I and the guy know what our career plans are. Then we'll generally know what we're committing the rest of our lives to.

I've seen too many airline marriages split up after airlines go down and ruin my friends' families. Other than my parents, I don't know anyone in aviation who salvaged their marriage after job change (this includes families with one and two pilots). Career changes seem like one of the worst things for a marriage, from my outsider's standpoint. So yeah...no marriage until I and the man have a career. :) And that frees me up to move to Timbucktoo if I feel like it!

So I can understand your reluctance to take the offer, OP, if that's the case! And you too, Barty...sorry you didn't get a better spot :-( If you're not tied down though, I still say go for it.

That is really sad. The people you know must not have very good relationships. I personally have had 3 different "careers" which I should have stuck with. Even though I didn't, my wife didn't bail on me. I would hate to live life afraid that if I changed jobs my wife would leave. That almost sounds retarded.

That's somewhat true Honopineapple, but even within the set careers of aviation there seems to be a lot of divorce, I don't know, maybe it comes with the territory.

Rott, Super-Walmart (or Super-Targer, dibs on the walmart), direct tv, a cold 24 pack, and a copy of Jarhead or Full Metal Jacket, I'll be happy.

I have the same situation though- married, kids in school, spouse with a great job... It'll work out. Talk to your HR rep on Tuesday or Wednesday when the dust settles. Good luck!

i figure i'll toss in my $.02 and it's something i've said before, we're the ones going to be working for the FAA not the other way around. Our geographical preferences were just that...preferences. if you have other circumstances keeping you from moving elsewhere or just can't see yourself working in memphis, then that's understandable. I do feel for you though because i realize this puts you in a difficult position. All in all, I guess all I'm trying to say is I wouldn't think the way things have unfolded as being too odd, it seems pretty consistent. Hang in there, talk it over with your fam, and I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

I haven't turned it down yet. I'm still going to try every possible avenue to get something closer to home before I just flat out reject it. I'll likely still go to the PEPC and all just to see if there isn't someone there who can make something happen. You never know...

Edit: Well, I went ahead and sent an e-mail back to get a PEPC date, so at least I'll have that locked in before my 31st b-day.
