Traditional tie, double windsor knot. That said, the only time the tie is on is when in the jet bridge and terminal. On the jet, off it goes. Not going to have someone grab it during an altercation and be able to choke me out with my own tie.

Zipper, mostly because I have trouble finding regular ties that are long enough for me to tie a half way decent knot and still have sufficient length to not make me look like I'm trying to pull off some sort of retro style look. I've not yet tried clip-on ties but I usually can't find any from our company vendor that might be long enough.

I have the same issue with the zipper wearing out and coming undone on its own after a short time though.

Just traded in the regular tie I've had as a new hire (6 years) for a clip on from a cut above. I didn't mind the regular, but found as the tie got older it was difficult to make the knot look good. Figured I'd try the clip on and see how I liked it. Thus far the biggest advantage is that I've found it works great as a book mark on my jeps.

I have a traditional tie, but I'll be swapping it for a zipper or clip-on with my next uniform order. Too much work to keep a traditional tie knot looking good.

Our uniform tie has the AirTran logo all over it, so there isn't a zipper version we can wear. Only traditional and clip-on are available. Traditional does have security/safety issues, so I wear the clip-on when flying. When I'm at the office, it's traditional tie.

Traditional when I do wear a tie... Half Windsor or full depending on the function. There is a lot of psychology that goes into the color/knot combo that probably means nothing to anyone other than other people who have read about it. I really like Jos A Bank's ties. Nice patterns and decent quality without hitting the pocket too hard. Every man should know ho to tie a tie.

I usually buy tie brands like Hugo Boss, so I was surprised when I bought some Jos A Bank ties and found them to be of pretty decent quality. You've got to buy them on sale, though. They're overpriced if you pay the sticker price.

Has anybody ever been held hostage/injured/killed/hung/decapitated while wearing a standard tie in the work place as a pilot?

Just wondering if it has ever been documented.

I used to see guys walking around ORD with filthy ties and that bugged the crap out of me. Thats what your ALPA pin is for. Put the pin over that week old coffee stain or bring an extra tie. ;)

Granted, during my SouthernJets Express days flying the "wicked pissa" crowd down to see the rat in Orlando, I was often battling airport Legal Seafood clam chowder out of my tie.

JetBlue doesn't offer a zipper solution. I use the clip on because:
1. I'm too lazy to retie the damn thing.
2. If you don't tie a regular one perfectly it looks worse than the clip on.
3. I like the ability to quickly take it off/ put it on in cruise.
4. In the unlikely event someone tries to hang me by my tie, it won't work. :)
5. I lost my tie recently, and all the company sto had was the clip on.

YMMV

They make us gate agents wear clip-ons for safety compliance. However, when not at work I prefer traditional ties.
