US Airways increases offer for Delta Air Lines

Bias from the source?

Those are the men and women that fly 100% of the aircraft for USAir. If they're already pissed, who's going to fly the airplanes? The Synergy fairy?

Negotations is nothing but rooms full of bias people arguing for their points. If they ain't bias, they have no business being in that room.

Close, but no.

Generally, most of the action happens in 'break out' rooms and there's very little face-to-face screaming from either side of the table.

So....why are we even arguing about this one? 'Cause I don't think there are really THAT many consumers that that really care about branding anymore unless you're talking about Southwest. Ask the average person to tell you the difference between Delta, United, USAir, American and...I dunno, some other legacy. They'll just tell you "Well it was cheap on Orbitz!"

That's all they know, that's all they care about. I swear that pilots and airline managment are the only people that think that this branding crap, and compitition with anything other than fares is actually important.

How does that make a difference? Competition is competition. PERIOD. It doesn't matter how big it is. I said HP has fought against WN very well over the years, and it doesn't make any difference if it has only been in one region. That one region was the only region HP was big in. It doesn't matter that they didn't have a war on the east coast.

That is like saying US and DL do not go up against each other, since it is only on the east coast, and not "coast to coast".

If you're not competing on the same routes for the same travellers, you aren't competing at all. Now, I'll give you a PHX-LAX pairing would be competiton, but a PHX-BWI or a LAS-MCI-MDW pairing wouldn't be. Why? B/c until the US Airways merger, HP didn't compete with SWA ON THOSE ROUTES. They picked and chose the routes to compete with, and they let SWA have the routes they couldn't compete on. What you're saying is like the Patriots playing the Yankees in the NBA Finals....

I still don't see how you come to that conclusion. PHX and LAS were HP's only hubs, meaning that 98% of their flights went through those cities. PHX and LAS also happen to be two of the biggest cities for WN. And while HP was not WN's only main competitor due to their very national presence, WN was HP's main competitor. Meaning, they fought the most with them.

So, HP didn't compete with anyone else out of LAS and PHX? That's kinda silly logic right there. WN competed with others, but HP didn't? Sorry, we're still comparing apples to oranges. It's like saying Midwest is the greatest airline in the world b/c they do well in MKE against Northwest. MKE is their only hub. You could say the same about Spirit in DTW/FLL. The differences are those airlines pick and choose their battles, and let the tougher competition where they would get creamed go. Why? It's a good business decision for them. Now, as I've said about five times already, I'd give you HP competing well against SWA IF they were actually competing with them. The fact is, SWA still manages to beat them out even in their own hubs. Why? Branding and a bigger route system. They fly to more cities, so they can feed more passengers into LAS and PHX. More market share is where you win the battle in ticket sales, especially in the leisure, LCC market. I don't think WN would really get too scared if HP (before US Airways) said, "We're gonna start LAS-MDW non stop!" WN already has the route covered, they've got the pricing in place and they've got the brand recognition already. They probably wouldn't bat an eyelass unless they visably started losing market share on that route. Then they'd lower prices (or have a "fare sale") even on a temporary basis in order to draw competition away from that. They could even fly at a loss on that route since their other routes could potentially subsidize the loss in exchange for the market share, a luxury an airline like HP, with a smaller route structure, doesn't necesarilly have. Just holding your own and surviving doesn't necesarily equal competiting. HP did got through a bankruptcy to survive, something SWA hasn't come close to.

Hey FlywithUS, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for a message a little later on this week (perhaps Thursday or Friday) from the good pilots (and major creditors) at Delta Air Lines, mm'kay? :) Either the GO or the airport, whatever's convenient for you and Parker! ;)

So my Delta will still be my Delta. Eh? (Rhetorical question!)

What make's NWA a better parter? That's simple.... Pacific Routes and a satellite base in Japan. Worth it's weight in Gold! If DL can pull it off they're gonna rake in the dough.

I am not favoring one side or the other in this matter. But out of curiosity (from reading the posts)...

What is the difference between US acquiring DL "possibly" for their EU routes opposed to DL acquiring NWA for their Pacific routes?

US has a marginal share of European routes and are looking to be the number 1 US air carrier in Europe as well as money in the pocket for investors and coporate management with Delta name branding. US has no pacific routes and Hawaii doesn't count. Like I said NW has has a huge pacific route structure with very few Euopean routes. There isn't overlap route structure like with DL and US particularly in the northeast corridor. If there is a merger out there that makes sense, NW and DL is it. In no way am I for a DL/NWA merger, but it does make sense if there were to be a said merger between the two. Mergers suck and take moving mountains and parting sea to unify two different employee groups. Mergers are a way of life post deregulation and won't be going away anytime soon
