UPS MD-11

It makes you think. If you found yourself in that situation where you're 15 seconds from dead and you know it. Due to a lithium fire.
To minimize loss of life do you crash it into the residential neighborhood killing innocents but forcing the regulators hand and saving many many more in the future or the correct and ethically right thing and put it in the unpopulated field and die for the profits of the company?
And which saves more lives?
We all know we're going to lose more planes to lithium fires. Statistically it won't be me so I can rationalize it.

Are you seriously asking whether, given the choice, one should decide to crash into a neighborhood (to prove some point) or an empty field?

Well, if it keeps you up at night there’s not a better time to find a different flying job.

If you look at the hazmat table a majority of the hazmat is forbidden on pax planes but are just fine on a cargo op. Its like yea the lives of 2 pilots and a ton of boxes are less than a pax plane crash. UNLESS that cargo plane happens to crash into a major urban area and wipe out more on the ground.

Huh? That’s insane.

Fire onboard? Shoot, "Tabriz Radar, Southernjets 419, mayday mayday, request vectors for Tehran"

I have a friend who flies the CEO around, there are places that they treat from a planning standpoint as if they were the Pacific Ocean.

Flying AMS to BOM, you're traversing war zones, friendly countries, not so friendly countries. Don't even get me started on Africa.

There's easier ways to satisfy your craving for koobideh beef...:)

Hell yes. In fact, I was just over at the Persian market buying some Sangak bread and advieh spice a few days ago.

Yeah I can make up words too.

For real though? Sounds delish [emoji14]

This is Sagnak bread and that is my hand so you know it ain’t Google. Ha!

When you make wraps (Koobodeh or Shawarma or whatevs) this bread is amazing for it. Light, a little crispy but meaty, the orange greasiness of whatever protein you’re using isn’t going to make it soggy. 06490BA2-6C62-4639-AC35-23A505E436F9.jpeg

This may be a really stupid question but if you have a pallet on fire that you think would down you, could you in theory, drop to 10k and depressurize, open a cargo door from the inside (hopefully the ULD on fire is right next to the door), unlock the pallet from the floor holders(?), put the plane into a 45 to 60 degree bank and jettison the flaming cargo? Before you tell me thats insane, a 747combi for SAA in the 80s or 90s had a onboard cargo fire, on the checklist it said to open one of the doors on the plane to vent the smoke.

I've heard that the way the air flows if you open the cargo door in flight it takes the left horizontal stab out. Might be the quickest way to end your suffering...

Well, it’s really a moot discussion because on the MD11, and every other fleet type we operate...that I know of, the main cargo door operation is deactivated (via the air/ground switch) once the aircraft becomes airborne.

Besides that, I’m pretty sure the main cargo door opening inflight would create more issues than it solves.

The SAA 747 checklist probably was referencing the small overhead emergency exit door in the cockpit since, unlike many large jets, the side windows can’t be opened.

I just thought it was interesting that it's probable that killing the people on the ground could save more lives long term. That's on the FAA.
It's one of those ethical questions that should at least make you think. Because it shouldn't exist, yet here we are.
Well, if it keeps you up at night there’s not a better time to find a different flying job.
Like I said. Statistically, I have nothing to worry about. We do though.
And if you think all the pax actually take all their devices with lithium batteries out of their checked luggage, I've got a bridge to sell you.

From APC
Ground crews loading an E-175 in SLC on 3/13 smelled something burning while loading bags on the airplane. They discovered a burning lithium battery in a toiletry bag and snuffed it out on the ramp.
Just want to say what an outstanding job they did spotting that and taking the appropriate action.
We have great ground crew in SLC. Thank you to those guys for seeing that!

Oh my gosh is this the thread where we talk about how we've been to Iraq and afghanistan and countless other countries? How did I miss it?
