UPS MD-11 crash at SDF

I think pretty much every bad-ish thing (save one that was certainly my own doing) that I've experienced while up front in a plan, has stemmed from a guy in the other seat saying some version of that.

Agreed! And a close second classic was the line “….oh ye of little faith.”, in response to someone doubting whether there was enough clearance to fly in between trees. 😂

There are so many other levers to pull in 121 than a slip. S-turns, 360 turn, ask for a vector, or yeah just GA. Guys panic here all the time when told to slow when approaching a crossing restriction. They forget ATC is a resource too, just ask for altitude relief.

Forward slip?
Very aircraft dependent.
On a Jet, swept wing, 121/135, not a great idea unless it's the end of the world.
There's a million things you can do to prevent the need for a slip, and even missing all of those, just go around.
(unless you're actively on fire or in a very shooty region)

Not to mention that, no matter the situation, if you screw it up, you look like the [butt]hole, even if the emergency is legit.

I always found it odd that VOYAGER's autodestruct sequence did not require another senior officer to arm/enable, whereas it seems like every other ship required the Captain and the Exec (or at least someone else down the line, or possibly two someones). Maybe it was because of the decimation of the senior staff by the trip to the Array. Or maybe just someone forgot how Starfleet normally did it.
I think Voyager's writers were inconsistent, to say the least.

We used to be a society.

We used to be a society.
I have this recurring wonderful dream where we let Airbus buy bits of MDC which means 320s and the like are built in Long Beach with American union labor instead of in Mobile, Boeing gave us a 757NG instead of a 737NGNG, Al Gore won the Presidency and killed bin Laden before anyone outside of the IC had heard of him, and Donald Trump stayed in the real estate and taking out angry ads calling for people to be executed business.

They can subcontract over peak and possibly beyond if they call it an emergency. The union has fought "emergencies" in the past and got payouts for the pilot group. Sometimes it's easier for the company to just go that route knowing they will have to make a settlement.

I know one UPS 67 Captain and he has doubts the MD-11 will ever return to UPS/FedEx.

His premise is, if UPS can live without MD-11’s for six months and peak, they can do without them forever.
Anything is possible. But if the companies wanted to park these airplanes they would have a long time ago. It's all going to depend on the fix, the longer term support from Boeing and any other regulatory demands. If Boeing, as some have suggested "wants no part in the fix", then I would hope that Boeing wants no part in future orders from these companies. If you frame it like that, the support is cheap if it's tied to future 777x orders that Airbus would love to have for their 350F.
