I think pretty much every bad-ish thing (save one that was certainly my own doing) that I've experienced while up front in a plan, has stemmed from a guy in the other seat saying some version of that.

Agreed! And a close second classic was the line “….oh ye of little faith.”, in response to someone doubting whether there was enough clearance to fly in between trees.

There are so many other levers to pull in 121 than a slip. S-turns, 360 turn, ask for a vector, or yeah just GA. Guys panic here all the time when told to slow when approaching a crossing restriction. They forget ATC is a resource too, just ask for altitude relief.

Forward slip?
Very aircraft dependent.
On a Jet, swept wing, 121/135, not a great idea unless it's the end of the world.
There's a million things you can do to prevent the need for a slip, and even missing all of those, just go around.
(unless you're actively on fire or in a very shooty region)

Not to mention that, no matter the situation, if you screw it up, you look like the [butt]hole, even if the emergency is legit.

I always found it odd that VOYAGER's autodestruct sequence did not require another senior officer to arm/enable, whereas it seems like every other ship required the Captain and the Exec (or at least someone else down the line, or possibly two someones). Maybe it was because of the decimation of the senior staff by the trip to the Array. Or maybe just someone forgot how Starfleet normally did it.

I think Voyager's writers were inconsistent, to say the least.

That was the Apache on the low level flight that tried to fly between trees. Luckily didn’t turn out worse.
