I've used it recently, it's not very intuitive, a lot of students spend 10 minutes programming it when it takes 2 seconds to mentally do it.

Shoot I had to ask for the published hold at BKA the other day...they told me to hold on my inbound awaiting approach clearance and I was like WTF?
I don't understand. Were you WTF'ing because you were given a hold or because you were given a simple non-published one?

In 3k plus hours of part 91 flying I have never been issued a non published hold
The only hold I've been given in more than 20 years (but a lot less hours than you) was a non-published hold. It was to KSAF which is below ABQ radar and I was instructed to hold to wait for departing traffic to clear the area. It was a simple VOR hold on the airway I was already inbound on.

I remember it not only because it was the only one but because the clearance was so short: "Hold southeast of the SAF VOR. Expect further clearance at ####Z"

Because I was given a non published one at the IAF which has a holding pattern procedure turn. Had I executed their instructions, I would have had to hold unpublished until given approach clearance, then do the entry of the published hold to get set up for final, then shoot the approach. It would have been stupid. As it was I requested the published hold, received it, but slowed down enough that I was given approach clearance just prior to the VOR.

That makes sense. Context is everything. I thought it was a situation of, say, holding on the R180 at a IAF/FAF with 360° FAC, not holding on the R300 at the same VOR.
