Unpublished hold programming in G1000/GNS530W

Does anyone know how to program a unpublished holding pattern into either of these systems? For example, tell it to hold off the 180 radial 10 DME, left turns?

Im not sure if you can get it to draw the race track on the screen if thats what you are looking for. However, you can use the cursor and make a random waypoint and have an OBS off that point. This allows you to hold at random anywhere you want still giving you distance and time to the fix.

Create a user waypoint. Hit OBS draw the inbound course and then make sure you turn the right way.

He wants to put the racetrack on the map, and then fly it using NAV or GPS autoflight modes (or whatever's appropriate for your configuration). I don't think the G1000 can do this (you can't say hold at FUBAR intersection unless it's published), which is disappointing for an otherwise very capable system.

It'd be pure sexiness to be able to say to the box, "hold at FUBAR, left turns, 4 nautical mile legs" and watch it do its thing - But I don't think you can.

I don't know how you'd do that with any GPS unit. Unpublished means not in the database. You'll need to set the holding fix as a waypoint and then you can either hand fly it normally, or do it by setting the autopilot on heading mode and changing the heading bug manually at the appropriate times and fly the hold that way. Still no holding pattern display on the moving map though.

That's what I thought, which as you say is surprising because you would think that it would not be at all difficult to program this in.

Easy, you select the point in space, turn directions and holding length and it creates a pattern for you. Even the old school FMS junior in the Dash could do this and the G1000 is much more advanced than it. If you consider this isn't something you can do on the Cessna Mustang jet which uses the G1000, that is really depressing.

Real FMSes(tm) can do it - I'd like to see the capability added (maybe as an FPL softkey or something) to make holding simple, especially in the heavier applications (Mustang). The G1000 hasn't gotten there yet. But don't worry, free flight with GPS and ADS-B will make it so that everyone can go direct and nobody will ever, ever have to hold! :insane: :laff:
