How many days can they JM you in a row? And do you have protection to work say 6+ days in a row?

Up to FAA legality. There are people who have been mandated to 15 day work weeks as they were junior assigned each of their off days in a 5 day stretch. That being said, the dispatcher needs to evaluate their fitness for duty and call off fatigued if they they feel they cannot safely exercise operational control.

There are no protections built in the contract. There is a letter of agreement now that golden days are protected from Junior Assignment, but junior lineholders do not receive golden days. It actually puts the slightly senior people at a greater risk of junior assignment than the bid reliefs.

I know it looks bad, and it is, but this is an unprecedented situation. With the hiring boom they are on I would hope the situation to starts to resolve by early next year. While it sucks, those that stick it out or come now will build seniority fast and have opportunities that you normally have to wait years for in short order.

How many desks does UA have? How many do they attempt to operate (before sick calls) does UA plan to run on a normal day?

Currently with summer flying. 18 west coast desks. 18 east coast desks. Currently 3 Transcon desks are open. Pre-Covid there was max of 8 of them. In the past two months, as staffing increases they’ve slowly reopened them to reach the 3. I think a 4th is being reopened soon. Right now the total we staff for is 39 Domestic desks. Obviously on Mids, a number of desks combine up. I think we only have about 25-26 open desks on Mids. So those are obviously operating as 24 hour desks. The rest are just Days/Afts.

I’ve heard they plan on opening new domestic desks as 2 deliveries and eventually 3 per week are brought onto property. Not sure what they’ll do with the numbering because beyond desk 40 the rest of the numbers are filled with Pacific, Atlantic, and South America desks

Just curious - why didn’t the union at UA negotiate a new contract this last time with the terrible QOL language it has? If I recall correctly they only negotiated changes to the payscale. Seems very odd that QOL as a whole would be completely ignored during negotiations.
Apathy leads the way!

Sigh… I’m so sick of people defending junior manning like it’s a good thing because it personally makes them more money. The company has done the same thing, look how much money you’ll make! It’s a selfish argument based upon your own bias for willingness to work overtime. It’s an opportunity for you, it’s a menace for everyone else and I can assure you everyone else is the majority.
I couldn’t even fathom initiating a debate of is junior manning a good thing or not. Maybe you are just trolling or being contrarian. All I suggest is think of the group and not yourself before making a judgment.. especially when it aligns with the company. The implications or your statement essentially imply if you give me enough money I’ll sign my life AND all my coworkers lives away, and quite frankly that’s degenerate. Not everyone signs up to that lifestyle, including myself and many many more.

Junior manning is good @delta @southwest @amERICan
It’s an opportunity… duh!!!

🤮
I understand why people are pissed for sure, especially if you’ve been dealing with your schedule getting jacked for months/years now. I personally am gonna pick up the phone and get my OT/short turn pay but I understand why people don’t and I don’t blame them. The company definitely could’ve seen this coming and got ahead of it but they didn’t.

You can only work so much till you burn yourself out. How much is too much work? Wow that’s a lot of empty desks.
Burnout isn’t the same as fatigue. The current contract and regs protect fatigue but not stress/burnout.

However for context, in response to this current situation the company has responded with the following to the union-

Are flights cancelling due to dispatch staffing?
Are desks being covered?
Are we following the contract?

While I’d love to editorialize the above, I’ll leave it to you to make a judgment.

Good leads the way my friend.

Are you mentally fit to perform safety sensitive tasks today? If the answer is no, then you are fatigued. Burnout is mental fatigue, and nobody is going to look twice at it when they look back and see you worked 10 days in a row.

That doesn’t mean you should fatigue out of every junior assignment, but if you truly need a break because of burnout and multiple junior assignments then you would be well within your rights.

How does United's fatigue policy work? Does it deduct out of your sick time? Do you still get paid for the shift? Are you required to fill out a fatigue report and have it reviewed like the pilots do?

I think UA may be the only airline where there's an actual fatigue policy for dispatch. Seems like most just have sick leave and that's it.

You call fatigue on a junior assignment. You don’t get paid for the junior assignment. If you were pay protected for your next shift, it’s reinstated.

Being a commuter I hate JM. I just had my 2nd JM on my Friday in 17 days. So I am not happy. While I am in town to work, I don't really have anything else to do. So picking up an extra shift or getting JM to me isnt an issue. Also being ex military, working 12 hrs on/12 hrs off for days, weeks and/or months, getting JM is a piece of cake. About the only good thing from all this is I maxed out my 401 over a month ago.
