United 747-200 w/ Winglets?

Currently, United only operates 747-400s. There are no -200s in the fleet (I wish). I did a little googling, and found that at one point they tried experimenting with winglets on the -200s. United never had any -200s with winglets though.

Is it just me, or does that look photshopped teh hell?

I went to college on the SF peninsula in the late-1970s, and the arrival for KSFO routed short-body 747s over campus all the time. I thought those looked like little hot rods. Were those 747SPs?

I thought the same thing, but further research reveals that it was in-fact real....

Probably, between PA and UA over the years. I think China Airlines used the SP to SFO too.

Now the -200, that was a capable airplane. Big leap over the -100 I gather.

UAL hasn't had an SP in service since the mid 90's. I think the last one went in '96. They had acquired them all (7) from Pan Am. Remember too, the fuselages were much shorter along with other differences. (different engines, taller fin, longer horizontal stabs, rudder with double hinges, fewer emergency exits- and some other differences) No way to convert that.

Gotta make room for the straight staircase too, vice the spiral one.

And yes, still numerous 747-100/200s here at MZJ, as well as a couple -300s and one or two -400s.

All the UAL SPs that were in storage are gone, though one comes through here occasionally for maintenance.
