My problem is obvious.
I joked about Sully, right after the incident too.
"Pissing Icecubes" and a lot of other stuff crossed my lips. When the press started to tear into the crew I became annoyed, because from just looking at Sully and Skiles I knew they where two experienced airmen, hit by a big booh booh that day. There was a lot of luck involved too and I would fall on my ass if Sully would not acknowledge this.
When the press called my house, asking for insider information (!) I had nothing to respond other than this:
From staring at the same TV show you guys are staring at in your Channel 6 studio, all I can tell is that there is an Airbus in the water, floating upright, with a bunch of people standing on it. There are no bodyparts floating around. Someone must have done something right.
Let me assure you, the idiot who called hated me for this.
A few minutes later they had dug up some retired airport manager who blurted out statements that would have sent the cows on the field into a depression...
My rule: "Let others talk out of their rear end."
Another rule: "If people think you are a fool for shutting up, it is better for them to think that then it would be if you opened your mouth and removed all doubt'
I have never flown a A320, I
never will. All I did to deserve the call from the press was an email I sent in 2004 after a gear up, in which I slapped the reporter around like a sex doll. Stupid idiotc speculators, nothing else they are. I received another call when Colgan lost the Dash 8.
In my book there is more to Sully that his 3 minutes of spotlight. He is what I like to see on the left seat of an airliner, well trained, calm, relaxed and humble. Until this incident his name had never crossed my screen, frankly I did not know there was a Sully at all.
I can not (unable, physically and emotionally) undermine or question someones integrity without knowing that person. Doing that, in my book is the equivalent to being just another senseless purpose lacking mobster. My preference is to approach my 'peers' (even if on different levels in terms of ATP, CFI or Private Student) with a basic amount of respect. I will not and have not kissed the floor Sully walks on, I won't collapse if I ever get him to appear in one of my Safety Meetings (I respect him, but I do not adore or worship him). I'd like to be able to drain every piece of knowledge, skill and ability out of my peers, so we can be better pilots someday. Quite selfish, I know, but I share my experience and knowledge too. I won't slime my ass off when I ever run into Doug (I think he is doing an awesome thing by fostering this forum) but I'd like to see him as a peer, not as a master.
From what I read here against Sully and his bookdeal, I must realize that there are many many people out there with very big ego problems. They simply cannot accept other people being more sucessful, more "go getters" more organized, or simply financially more independent then themselfes. It used to be different in this country, and I miss these times. "Live and let live" used to be the motto. Now it appears to be "Smear and make sure not to get smeared". We need to stop slinging mud and feces at each other, just because the big guys do it, does not mean we have to be the same. Sully is one of us. Remember that next time Octomom creeps over your screen.
Hyundai - think about it.
