Trip meals

I don’t get it though. Most of these guys are lineholders. I’ll watch them spend $15 on a sandwich and a coke then say they can’t afford $20/month. That’s just being unrealistic.
Or not even throw the van driver at least a buck for slinging the bags. It’s embarrassing. Luckily, most captains don’t do this.

Yep and the guys I fly with aren’t broke regional FOs either. Granted they’re taking somewhat of a pay cut the first year but if you can’t get by on 75-90k then you’re doing something wrong.

I can’t stand when people don’t tip the van driver. This dude maybe makes 20k and you can’t give him a damn dollar? When someone does that with me i always open my wallet back up and give the driver extra and make sure the cheap ass sees me do it.

On that note i always tip regular hotel van drivers $2 and the private transportation guys at least $3 and most of the time $5.

Yea I usually just do $1/bag. He/she gets an extra dollar or two if they drive me to get something eat or drop me off somewhere.

I notice Fa's almost always tip, but maybe 50% or less of the CA's I fly with do...

I'm at $2 as well...the private guys get paid fairly well already. In fact if you notice on a lot of their screens it will allocate $5-$10 in tip in addition to the charge.

Sorry bud but that looks disgusting. LOL You say 9.21 out of pocket on the road, but how much did this home-brought stuff all cost?

Fact is when you're on the road, you're gonna be spending money on food. Some just spend most of that money before day 1 to lug food around for the next 4 days. No thanks :)

Under $30...I've already done the math because I'm a penny pincher and wanted to know. Disgusting? Whatever, if tastes amazing and brings home to me while on the road.

Back on the cooking subject:
I frequently buy mixed quinoa, frozen stir fry veggies, and frozen chicken breast from costco.
- Thaw then marinate and season the chicken to your liking
- cut it in bite size pieces and cook in a pan with some coconut oil (or whatever else you prefer, I change it up depending on how I want the chicken to taste)
- cook the quinoa, or rice and add some seasoning for flavor
- steam the veggies
Combine this in your tupperware, freeze a couple and leave one thawed. Its good at room temp or hot. Also bring some hot sauce packets to put on. You can also get mini bottles (not alcohol) that you could fill with dressing like ranch or any other topping.

It's pretty healthy varying with your toppings.

For breakfast I mix yogurt with granola and vanilla protein powder when I leave before the hotel breakfasts.

What did you tell him? This can be one of those touchy situations.

Touchy? Not touchy at all. If he's flying somewhere after work, we have a massive lounge in DTW.

Nah, I told him that at our airline, generally speaking, a standard suitcase and an EFB bag is customary. But when you've got an EFB bag, a suitcase, a big infantry style duffle bag, a cooler, a backpack and a gym bag it creates an undue cockpit hazard because his crap was literally in every nook and cranny.

Stuff jammed in the coat closet, stacked in the flight kit storage area, on all the aft panels on both sides and bags behind my seat and his, and we haven't even gotten to the standard rollaboards yet. And when you add four flight attendants and their bags, plus his caravan of stuff, it's pretty bad when we're staking crap on passenger seats and the rear storage area is full-on Tetris, waiting for a sharp stop to brain someone.

"Now Milton, you have to share".

That’s just embarrassing. Maybe they should walk to the hotel.

Watched a captain on his first time in Accra get in an argument over a taxi fare. Someone told him what the fare should be, and the poor driver was asking for a little more. Skipper came unglued. We let him dig hisself a huge hole, and then told him he was arguing over the equivalent value of US .25 cents.

That’s right, the difference in local currency only came to a US quarter. The look of utter embarrassment and chagrin on his face was worth it! Other FO and I kept leaving quarters all over the cockpit for the rest of the trip.

But Milton never received a piece....

Speaking of buying airport food on a long day, what places are you guys looking at or what are you looking for to stay healthy on a long duty day? I realize some days are rushed and fast food is all you get. It just appears some of the salads I get at airports are crap lettuce and processed chicken. I don't mind grabbing the pre-made sandwiches but some argue those aren't healthy either. Seems like no matter what I eat people are saying "it's not healthy"....but it's better than McDonalds?

I'm on board with not bringing my food I usually just pack snacks and maybe a soup if I need it in the hotel.

If you eat salads stay away from the creamy dressings. They often have 300+ calories alone. Also no cheese, that adds another 150+ calories. Avoid bacon and ham as well. I have seen some salads go over 1,000 calories!

Get the vignette dressings.

I haven't seen a true healthy meal on the road in a long time - they are often loaded with sodium especially all the premade stuff. It's why I just bring my own, I know what goes into it.

I'm ORD based and there's one stand that sells decent pre made salads. I frequently grab one between flights to bring to the hotel if where im going doesnt have any decent food options nearby.

CIBO gourmet or something along those lines. It's somewhere between G and H. There's this one mixed green with chicken, tomato, artichoke and a decent vinaigrette that I get. The Thai chicken one is good too, but a little less healthy.

The Camden food co where I can build my own salad = amazing. I wish every airport had one build your own salad place.

Anyplace that has a build your own salad is good. The chain type restaurant(TGIF, Chili’s, Macaroni Grill etc) is what I tend to get. But don’t order the Monster burger with fries. I will get the salmon/fish and steamed vegetables. Brown rice is usually an option at most places. If you do fast food it’s all about moderation. Great app to download is Grab. It has most airports and restaurants and you can pre-order your meal.
