Throwing fuel on the SDL airport noise fire.....

AOPA chimes in on Scottsdale

[ QUOTE ]
AOPA COMES TO THE DEFENSE OF ARIZONA AIRPORT
When Scottsdale, Arizona's airport came under fire recently from anti-noise activists, AOPA President Phil Boyer came to its defense. He wrote an op-ed piece for the local newspapers, reminding residents of all Scottsdale Airport (SDL) does for the community. "The airpark generates $2.5 billion to $3 billion in annual economic activity," he wrote. And he noted that an updated noise study at the airport found that although operations have increased since the original study five years ago, the number of people impacted has decreased. "A mile of highway will get you one mile, but a mile of runway will get you anywhere in the world—an important consideration in today's global economy," Boyer noted. "It would be a shame for a progressive community like Scottsdale to lose its competitive edge."

I live in Graceland Park, Maryland and when my parents purchasd this house, we signed a waiver saying our house lies in the approach path of two airports. One airport is KMTN, which is 7 miles from my house. The other airport is KBWI, which is roughly 12 miles from my house.

We have airliners flying 3000 feet above our house and we love it. We have police helicopters flying 500 feet over our house and we love it. When we signed the waiver, we were not asked whether we liked it our not, and our house is not located in a cheap neighborhood. I'm not sure of the other states where people live but it would be nice to find out if the noise complainers signed any waivers.

At Martin State Airport, management receives numerous noise complaints and I'm told they usually come from the same person. This person has a waterfront home which was built long after the airport, and yet this same homeowner never complains about the noise speedboats make just a hundred feet from his house. This person, as you guessed is a boat lover. There are numerous marinas in the immediate vicinity of the airport and you would think the marine and aviation enthusiests(sic?) could get along.

City Council to say: "Home Buyer Beware"?
From AvWeb:[ QUOTE ]
In a fine example of letting the buyer beware, the Scottsdale (Ariz.) city council is considering putting up signs near its airport warning prospective buyers of neighboring homes what they might be buying into. "I think it is a brilliant plan, and I will suggest the council pursue it," Councilman Bob Littlefield, chairman of the city's subcommittee on aviation issues, told the East Valley Tribune. "If we did this it would be 100 percent clear, and we wouldn't have to worry if real estate agents are disclosing the noise issue." The signs are one option in a noise study being done by the FAA at the increasingly busy resort city's airport. As more and more subdivisions sprout from the desert around the airport, the number of noise complaints has skyrocketed but, in contrast to some other communities we can think of, Scottsdale officials appear refreshingly unmoved by the complaints. "If you don't want to get sea spray on your house in San Diego, don't buy a house next to the ocean," Airport Commissioner John Mack said. "Just as if you don't want aircraft noise, don't buy a house next to an airport."

Very good idea. Then NOBODY can whine about, well, I didn't know about the airport noise!

Or they can whine, but then the city council can say, shut up. I can't hear you, I hear a couple of Gulfstreams and Citations overhead.

They ought to see if they can get a clause put in all contracts for houses around the airport that says you are near an airport, it makes noise, it will continue to make noise, you have been informed of this and as part of buying your house here, you accept that you have no recourse.

Geez.

Meanwhile we're spraying massive loads of pesticides and pre-emergent weed control over every square foot of the desert!

Take back the airport and make it a reasonable neighbor to its citizenry and homeowners. Sky Harbor Airport is only 20 minutes by ground and probably two minutes by air from Scottsdale Airport. The pilots and planes have other options, and it won't harm our tourism industry one bit.

[/ QUOTE ]

So, basically, it's OK if the neighbors of the other airport have to deal with the noise, just so long as this piece of work doesn't have the noise near *him*.

Can you say NIMBY? I knew that you could!

"Me, me, me.....what can I do for ME!"

Every time an aircraft lands at KSDL after 10 PM, airport ops attempts to find the tail number and then writes a letter to the owner/operator stating that they just violated the Scottsdale Noise Abatement Procedures and that they should arrange their schedules to refrain from doing so in the future.

What was that about the so-called procedures being VOLUNTARY?

Great, so the FBR open shuts down most access to my home, and now they want to shut down the airport for the golf game?

Personally, ever after the name change, the event is sinking further into non-importance.

These events are making people weird. What next, are they going to blame the city for the rain? Wait...Someone did that last weekend...
