this must kinda suck, eh?

I fill up at the same gas station every time I fill up

Cool! Me too!

See, for me, the thing is time. I want to leave when I want to leave, and I want to come back when I want to come back. Saving a few bucks and then having to fly at times when I don't want to? Bah.

Now I know that someone else will say, it's all about the price. Fine. So be it.

So let me see if I have this staight...

A Delta 1st year FO will get paid less than a Comair 3 year FO?

Not me. I don't care what brand of gas I put in my car, and I fill up where it's convenient. I look at the price to a certain extent, but prices change frequently and I don't usually bother to keep track.

As far as buying airline tickets, my first choice is the home-town underdog airline rather than that bully big airline, but my choice also depends on the price and schedule. Truthfully, I would prefer not to travel by airline but I can't afford to charter the airplanes that I fly.

Re: Brand loyalty... or not

well, i'll buy gas at whichever station is easiest to get into and out of for me (ie don't have to make a left onto a busy street) and if there are two that are convient, i'll go with the cheaper one. Brand name (in terms of gas) means nothing to me. Gas is gas

Don't think for a second that there won't be a ripple effect at Comair, ASA and the other Delta Connection partners. Those contracts will be renegotiated in BK court, too. (Yes, they're still headed there. Trust me.)

Not to mention the fact that there are no 1st year FOs at DL! Doug, what's the hire date of the most junior FO in the company not still on furlough? 2001? 2000?

You know Tony, people'll drive across town to save $.05/gallon on gasoline. You figure after driving from Mesa to Glendale for gas, in traffic, and then waiting in a monster line, you ate up the cost advantage at the first couple of stop lights.

On talk radio, I heard a story of someone renting a Uhaul in AZ to drive to SAN to purchase a couch at Ikea on a 10% off sale.

I'm thinking, round trip Uhaul isn't all that cheap, plus driving time, plus gasoline, plus higher California state tax... Would have been worth it to purchase it locally, keep the tax revenue in the local economy and that 10% higher price and free delivery would have easily offset the Uhaul rental, drive time, gasoline and higher CA state tax.

People are sheep....

People are loyal to a gas station? Man, not this guy!!

Now, airlines? I have a little bit of loyalty...not much, though.

I follow the same thing emily does.. I go for location convenience.. if it's on my way out/in.. i stop there.. i don't see the point of making uturn or having to turn around for any particular gas station! and price doesn't make a difference because from station to station/city to city.. they're not really all that different or competitive (a few cents here and there doesn't really amount to a whole heck of a lot really)...

I know. It's ridiculous. People THINK they're saving money by driving 20 minutes to save a nickel a gallon on gas. Say they get 20 gallons. Woo hoo, saved a buck.

But they wasted 40 minutes. At minimum wage, they lost about $3.00. And the wear and tear on their car? Say they drove ten miles each way. At 39 cents a mile, that's $7.80 they wasted.

So, in order to save a buck, they wasted ten.

Kind of like the morons who get credit cards with super low interest rates and then miss a payment. Well, now that super low interest rate just got jacked up to 24.99 pecent!

These are the people who will leave at 6:00 AM and come back at 11:30 PM in order to save $20 on a flight. When you consider that you're going to now have to spend at least another $10 on parking at the airport alone.....

"Proposed" first-year rate is $56/hr. I'd be going from like $147 to about $104 or so.

Doug,

If they try to hand that to you, strike. If that dosen't work, start a riot (works for college kids!). That's not a pay cut, it's extortion.

$10 says that within a year from now, it's going to be determined that the current agreement won't be enough..............

Lemme clarify. $56 for a new hire in the first year of seniority. But the most junior person on furlough was hired back in 2001 (Troy Kane, and has an article in Wall Street Journal today).

But my MD-88 goes from $140-ish/hour to $103-ish/hour - too lazy and disinterested to look at the 'to the cent' figures in the PDF file.

It's extortion, pure and simple. But after 9/11 it's certainly been more of a 'job' than a 'profession' so am I pissed? Certainly, but I'm much more of a online-business geek than I am a fly/sleep/eat aviation guy!
