Things I like about Aviation (or in general..)

I like a Sunset over a cloud deck.

I like landing at a very busy airport with rapid fire atc commands and not missing a beat.

The still of the morning air, especially fall and winter.

How the airplane feels "happy" in a cold winter morning climbing out with the best climb rate you have ever seen.

Watching a student finally "get it".

those two little squeaks from the tires when you grease one on.

Seeing that HUGE grin from someone who just took a discovery flight, and you know now...they got the bug!

cruising in calm air looking down as the earth passes by underneath you.

watching the movie 16R with a group of people from teen, to World War ll pilot veterans (General at retirement) who laughs at the exact same time at the exact same thing. seeing every one nodding in agreement. seeing this diverse group in complete harmony...because of an airplane!

stretching my neck to watch the 737 taxiing by opposite direction, and then seeing the capt stretching his neck checking out your airplane...then waving when our eyes meet!

how aviation is like a family.

I like how this gave me an idea...

.... maybe a 16R watching party at NetJC.

I love...

...the people: pilots, controllers, flight attendants, mechanics all.
...understanding the system.
...learning from my fellow pilots.
...flying a new-to-me type of airplane, or even an individual airplane that is new to me: they're all different.
...sunset, at any altitude.
...sunrise, at any altitude.
...the feeling you get when you push 'em up for takeoff.
...the immense satisfaction of breaking out of the clouds and having the runway in sight.
...watching the big Boeings take off and land underneath me as I thread my way across the mess that is the LA Metropolitan area.
...having 600 horsepower at my disposal and the chance that I'll have more someday.
...being a third generation commercial pilot.

I really could go on and on, and repeat what a lot of people already said, but here goes.

The satisfaction from doing anything well... be it a landing, a whole flight, etc. Especially looking back on how difficult some of it all seemed when I was first starting out.

Sights/sounds/smells... Even on the crappiest of days working around airports, seeing some of the planes I'd oogled at pictures of as a youngin' up close and smelling jet exhaust was something I'm always glad I get the chance to do. I remember how much of a special thing it was when my mom would go in on a Saturday morning to have the mechanics/pilots show me around the airliners at her work. I only got the chance once or twice back then but the fact that I now get paid to be around the same types of planes a few times a week is pretty awesome.

Once I got hooked on aviation I found what I wanted to do for a living. Before that I really had no clue. I'm pretty lucky that so far that all of my jobs have been working around airplanes, something I've really enjoyed. I've yet to work a job that I didn't actually want. Knock on wood. Even though my job's on the line now, looking back I'm extremely happy that I've had the chance to do something I've enjoyed for the past year or so.

The people. Not only have I made a lot of friends that I otherwise wouldn't have made, the fact that I can have engrossing conversations with total strangers simply because we share the same passion is pretty amazing. Be it pilots who noticed me studying on layovers or some old airport bum with a ton of "war stories" that strolled into the FBO on a slow day.

I love taking people up for the first time, watching their facial expressions and then giving them the controls.

I love going into a cloud or being just above a cloud.

I love looking down at the world and knowing I can escape from life in two dimensions and be completely relaxed while doing so.
a%3E

I love flying at night or over water. (not necessarily at the same time)

I love knowing the frequency before the hand off, hitting the flip flop and calling the controller on duty by name.

I love airspeed and altitude.

I would go on about things I love outside of aviation but I would be here all day just trying to type it all up!

Be nice to Stella. She's only just begun to find out how hard the world can really be.

Hehe, so am I. Got screwed back and forth by my aviation school, but there still positive things I`ve taken with me, and since Im so fresh still, those things would be:

My first Ils in the Twin
My first acrobatic fun flight
I love the late night cross country flights, watching the skylines while cruising.
I like the friendly personell that are making my days so much easier!!

I love the smell of jet exhaust. Reminds me of airshows when I was a kid.

I love the sound of a radial.

When I am in the air and looking out the window I start thinking about how there is nothing holding this chunk of metal in the air but air. I love that sense of amazement.

I love it when I demo something for a new student pilot and the look at me with amazement, try it and can't even come close, then sometime later master the certain skill.

I like taking the train, and hershey's bars without almonds.

I was renting a plane out of HYS. I called the FBO and said I would be there in an hour and if Nxxxxx was avialable.

They answered

Mr. xxxxx we will have your airplane ready for you.

OK that came in second.

First was being able to be there when all my kids were born and being the first to hold them.

Watching the smoke pour out the back end when starting an L1011 and then hearing the pops of compressor stalls on departure

I like seeing something beautiful, unexpected and unusual.

... such as being in the lineup short of the runway in Toronto and seeing a B-25 do a low pass. Beautiful!

Two of my favorite things I've ever seen have been in Toronto too.

First was taking off out of there early some morning and seeing the city skyline poking up out of the fog.

The other was going in late one summer night and watching a lightning bolt shoot past our plane and hit the CN tower.

I like how an airplane brings a smile to my face (a new Meridian or TBM, a KA, a Business Jet, etc.).

I like how every airplane that I see arrive or depart (once in a while, fly over me), I wonder where it has been, where it is coming from, where is it going.

I like the hangar "hang out" on a Saturday (although there don't seem to be as many airport rats as back in the day (1980's)).

I like farm country airports.

I like how this thread may be responsible from keeping me from getting a degree I don't care about, just so I could earn a good wage.

I like how this thread may have convinced me to pursue a career field that I have always been attracted to (and was raised in), but avoided to chase money and missery in the business world!

Perhaps an early Thank You!

I like it when I fly my plane to small rural fields, and traffic around the approach end of the runway actually stops to watch me land.

Or maye they're just waiting to see if I screw up.

i thought about this thread today when it happened to me.

i like it when im driving to work at the airport, and a plane on final passes right over the street right in front of my car. its usually a 152, but its at about 25 ft agl and its awesome.

That's a great one - after 22 years I still feel the same way...In fact, I make my soccer teams take "Plane Breaks" when someone flies over.
