Things I like about Aviation (or in general..)

Seems like we have a lot of threads going where people are venting a little bit talking about things they don't like, wish were different, etc.

I'd like to play the other side of the coin and get a thread going about things we like about aviation, our jobs, and life in general.

For those who might derail the thread with negativity, I'd just like to point out that it's been said that when people do bad things, God kills a kitten.

My brother and his wife just got a new kitten. They named her Stella.

So let's avoid the negativity. If you can't do it for me, do it for Stella. :)

I like long Miami layovers, flight crews with a sense of humor that's bawdy, and one leg home on the last day of a trip.

I like watching the sun rise over the mountains in Mexico during climb out.

I like my new place and how my drive home now goes right under the final approach paths for the east runways in DFW. My favorite is when there's a 757 passing right in front of me. I dig living near water (any water!) again.

I dig all my peeps here in DFW and at large.. JC or otherwise. Good times.

They really need to dust their piano :D

BTW, feline AIDS is the number 1 killer of domestic housecats.

Yeah, my brother's not much for housekeeping in his studio. I gotta admit, that post seriously made me laugh. Be nice to Stella. She's only just begun to find out how hard the world can really be.

I love my wife

I love my dog

I like working in a 3 dimensional world

I like the smell of leather in an airplane

I like banking past 30 degrees

I like flying in calm air into a beautiful sunset

I like greasing a landing

I like when controllers are in a good mood

I like that no matter how crummy the weather is on the ground, you just reposition yourself vertically (climb to altitude) and you'll always encounter sunny blue skies.

I love playing with my 3-year old toddler.

I like keeping it fast to the marker.

I like flying the target (in my previous career I shot down airplanes - I also enjoyed shooting down airplanes - shooting down the faster ones like the Mach 2+ targets were especially satisfying)

I enjoy sun/moon rises/set on the open ocean

Aviation:
I like the smell of an old airplane - smells like oil, avgas, and old leather.

I like how anyone involved in aviation wants to talk about it. A total stranger will notice you're a pilot and all of a sudden you're kin.

I love a good landing. I'm an inexperienced pilot so I can't grease it often. When I do it's worthy of a little mental fist pump.

I like flying over a traffic jam on the highway, and thinking, "suckers"

I like taking people for their first ride in a GA aircraft.

I like flying to podunk airports in the middle of the desert and talking flying with the crusty old dudes...man do they have some stories.

I like it when air traffic controllers thank you for your help when you do them favors on a busy day.

I like meeting new people with a common interest.

I like that old cessna smell (I'm probably in the minority here)

too many to list...

We need more pilots like Charlie!

I love the feeling I get when tower clears me for takeoff and I taxi onto the runway. Also I really enjoy seeing my students progress and go on to successful careers! :)

Daaaang y'all are making me miss flying for a living :(.

I like breaking ground on the first flight of a Texas fall morning, when it's chilly and the morning inversion is still there. The air on the ground is perfectly still, and there is steam fog coming off every little creek, lake, and pond for miles around. The airplane leaves a trail of mist behind it as the dew blows off, and then you're airborne....

I like the way the clouds start to darken, and then break up as you approach minimums, and they way they get brighter right before breaking out on top to maneuver...

I like spending a lazy Saturday with my wife, and taking a nap while watching LotR.

I like a slow-paced summer afternoon in the hangar, gabbing with co-workers while wrenching on something with the hangar door open.

I love the amount of time at home that this job CAN (but doesn't always) give you at home

I love that I'm basically left to do my own thing at work. I show up at work, duty in on a computer, check my mailbox, find the airplane, work for 1-4 days, and go home without having to speak with my boss(es).

I love flying over the Appalachian mountains in the fall and watching the leaves turn at the top and each day the line between red and green gets lower and lower.

I love some of the things that we get to see from the airplane. Two notable ones is flying an approach into YYZ last summer and having a bolt of lightning shoot past the airplane and hit the CN tower. Another one is taking off from YYZ on a foggy morning and seeing the downtown skyscrapers sticking out of the top of the clouds.

I love flying with a good crew, even if I'm not the most social on the overnights.

I love breaking out at mins. something about going 130-140 kts 200ft above the ground and only seeing a couple lights and having that be good enough.

I love hand flying the airplane.

I love when I can help someone around the terminal who legitimately needs help (not the idiots who are too lazy to read signs for themselves).

I love getting compliments from passengers on the landing.

I love flying a visual approach and having everything work out just barely because you know your airplane. As fast as you can until the last minute but being configured and stable right at 500 ft.

Aviation:

.
I love that about aviation. The other day I was talking to this guy with a Lancair and he invited me to go for a quick spin with him out to the practice area. Real cool airplane.

I love that nervous anticipation of landing something I've never flown before.

I like playing darts. A lot.

:yeahthat:

But let me add a few

I like dealing with controllers when they are training, it's a fun change of pace.

I like taking family members flying.

I like hearing football score updates over the radio.

I like visiting with older, more seasoned pilots at the FBO about everything not just aviation.

I like hearing exchanges between 135/121 pilots and student pilots or other pilots early in the their training and hearing "we were all student pilots at some point"

We need more pilots like Charlie!

I like when people say stuff like that. :)

Long tradition of 'Charles' type folks leaving a positive mark on aviation. I'm trying to continue the tradition.

I like that point at rotation when the whole world slides from two dimensions into three. Bonus: A nice, meaty turn with a high rate of climb right after. Pure gold, right there.

I like the fact that no matter how bad a flight has been (re-routed, crap weather, etc.) when you grease the landing and the pax tell you how nice the flight was.
I LOVE the smell of burnt jetA, and hopefully will one day be the guy burning it.
I like that after 10 years of this off and on relationship, I still get the butterflies when I feel the mains lift off.
I LOVE the way the the world looks at altitude.
I like the way I am forever humbled everytime I see a sunset above a cloud deck.
I like that no matter what your political affiliation may be, or the socio-economic back ground from whence you came, we all have the same undying devotion to flight. And can allow that to overcome our differences if just for a few minutes.

I dislike Charlie for reminding me of these things.

That is one of the greatest things about aviation.

I like the feeling I get every time I take the runway.

I like hearing the words "your airplane".

I like doing 250 to the marker in a jet.

I like how the world looks from the 370.

I love my gf and our great dane :)

I love living on Lake Lanier in the summer.

I love my job right now, I was getting burnt out this past year and it's nice to find a job that is actually fun and enjoyable.

I love flying at twilight/dusk/sunset...there is nothing better.

I love the lines of an L-1011 TriStar and the rumble of a RB-211 engine starting up.

I love Maker's Mark.

I love flyby's...as seen here...

I like working with fun crew members I've worked with before,.

I like meeting new crew members, hitting it off and having a long layover in a new city we explore together before we actually "suit up" and work a flight. (trip I'm on now!)

I like the silence of flight when most of the pax are asleep, we've been flying all night and seeing a beautiful sunrise.

I like seeing the beauty of nature in different parts of the country and world such as Mt. Fuji, Alaska, Greenland, the Alps, etc.

I like flying an approach to just above minimums and making the field - doesn't happen much for a VMC guy like me ;)

I like going on pleasure trips in GA aircraft. No schedules, no TSA, great view, reminds me why we all learned to fly in the first place. Extra points when the trip is planned with your friends 2 hours prior to departure.

I love walking my dog.

I love taking someone up for their first ride in an airplane. I have only had the privilege of doing it on a handful of occasions, but there is something special about introducing others to this evil mistress we call aviation.

I like being a member of any group that will spontaneously consume large volumes of beer and sing dirty songs. Actually, sailors and hash harriers are probably better at this, but aviators are cut from the same cloth...

And of course, I like watching Charlie strike out with the ladies :beer::beer:
