My takeaway is that they did their job and researched deep into the "why", but it was probably equally probable that the dude was just ham-fisted (or footed). In any segment of aviation, you will find them. Normally they don't break tails off airplanes though, so there is that. Only time I ever touch the rudder is on the runway, or very very near it. Maybe someone here is smarter than me about this, but I don't feel like anything good happens in a transport cat airplane at normal airborne speeds with rudder inputs.
Agreed on rudder usage. Takeoff roll to maintain centerline, and during flare if needed in a crosswind. And obviously V1 cut/engine out.
Inflight? Leave the thing alone.
As for the FO, you could tell even on the runway he was questioning the distance ahead of the JAL 747. The CA had no issues at all. Plus, they’re flying an A300. Highly unlikely it will rollover in awake encounter. And the FO asked several times for “max power” and “let’s go for max power please.” Why? They’re doing 250kts climbing positive rate without any hint of altitude loss. The guy just wasn’t up stairs mentally when it came to flying.
