The Great Jumpseat War of 2019

I would not deny a UA pilot a jumpseat because of what some union fight (and in one case, non-union) led to changes in the FOM. As long as they are CASS approved and got the appropriate jumpseat boarding pass, valid license, airline ID, I'm good with that.

What happened to the universal JC attitude of "they pay me to fly how they want, so I follow the rules.." and "...I wear the hat because the books say so".

I more or less think that attitude breaks when you’re threatened for professional retaliation for doing same, as an observation.

Yup.

dude!!! I think I know who caused this!!
Is this a legacy AK thing?

Have you been reading the SkyWest manuals? I swear that’s printed in invisible ink on page 1 in every single one of them.
Bad manuals are bad and they should feel bad. "Hi, have you ever heard of the imperative tone, and did you ever take (much less pass) a logic class?"

Any language like this that is hysterically^2* overspecific has some kind of story attached to it.

* The squared is because not only is it hysterically funny, but the event behind it was a hysteric overreaction.
Most of what lies in an air carrier's FOM or Volume 1 or whatever is there because someone done messed up, A-a-ron, and now the rest of us suffer as a result, as I am sure you are aware.

Is that to ensure you spill it on the center pedestal when you trip over whatever on your way to your seat?
Cause that's how you spill sticky liquid on 100k avionics.

And that’s precisely why I don’t follow this nugget of the FOB, and would gladly explain myself to anyone that it was in the interest of safety.
The concern is when you open the can, it could fizzle and come pouring out. But the solution is to not open it over an aircraft instrument/console. I take a closed can, sit down, then open it in my crew meal tray (which will contain it), or with my seat still back, open it so anything would fall on the carpet below.
