The Great Jumpseat War of 2019

We are being told the war is happening. Expecting FOM changes tomorrow morning. Management is meeting. We were told Republic and OO met with UAL tonight or some sort of "conversation" and they have not budged. Mesa was not mentioned in our emails which gives me reason to believe they are out. Sad news. They told us to expect more news from management tomorrow morning I guess.

Whenever my phone rings, I’ll admit my reaction is “OH MY GOD!!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”

Mesa's flying is on month to month basis on expired contracts. Partaking in this war would be unexpected.

I’m on a short overnight and won’t have time to check my SkyWest email after this post as we aren’t required to do so on trips. But if the FOM did change, that would really put us FOs in a strange position. Even those of us against this action and wearing APLA lanyards for the drive.

Names of the PIC and SIC are being given by UAL pilots to UALPA after a denial. So it’s luck of the draw as to what captain I’m flying with. I think I’m ok this trip, but not the next in this regard. Strange times indeed.

Not that captains aren’t in a tough or tougher spot themselves, it’s just a weird place to be as an FO.

My FOM says I cannot bring in a closed coke can into the flight deck, it must have its pressure relieved before being brought in. You know what, I bring in a closed can anyway and then open it.

I would not deny a UA pilot a jumpseat because of what some union fight (and in one case, non-union) led to changes in the FOM. As long as they are CASS approved and got the appropriate jumpseat boarding pass, valid license, airline ID, I'm good with that.

Dear United/"United Express Exclusive” Pilots,
Unfortunately, due to recent software changes driven by the United ALPA MEC, we will be unable to accommodate any jumpseat requests from United or UAX Exclusive Pilots until further notice. The update removed the priority for United Express Pilots from their software used to award the jumpseat, thus prioritizing SkyWest Pilots as “Other Airline Pilots” by time of check in. This is a direct violation of our longstanding reciprocal jumpseat agreement. Additionally, it violates the priority order for United/UAX Exclusive Pilots in our Flight Operations Manual (FOM) jumpseat priority list in accessing the flight deck jumpseat on SkyWest Aircraft. We regret to inform you that until the issue is resolved, we cannot accommodate jumpseat requests by pilots from:
• United Airlines
• ExpressJet
• Trans States
• CommutAir
• Air Wisconsin
Please contact your MEC and Jumpseat Committee and ask them to correct this issue immediately. It is our hope to return to an agreed-upon reciprocal agreement as soon as possible. We would like to express our regret to every pilot affected by these circumstances. We are committed to a swift and amicable resolution, and in no way intend any disruption or interruption to United’s operations.
Regards,
SkyWest Airlines Pilot Association Jumpseat Committee

I feel like I've gone insane when I read this over.
The Industry standard for jumpseat priority is:
1) Own metal
2) Wholly owned partners
3) Non-wholly owned codeshare partners
4) All other airlines

That’s what the new United agreement is.....

There are four issues we have with this unilateral change:

1. UALPA dictating to SkyWest the priority of our jumpseats on SkyWest aircraft.
On our United branded aircraft.....

2. Adding “Must Ride” status for Approved United Personnel on par with the FAA priority and above ALL pilots.
Have they looked at our FOM that has several people above our pilots as well?

3. Lowering SkyWest pilots in the priority lists on all UAL/UAX-E and GoJet operated flights.
Because you didn’t sign the agreement. They’re making it sound like once the agreement is signed this would still be the priority list. It wouldn’t. It would be the priority list that they have stated is industry standard.

4. UAL/UAX-E and GoJet Dispatchers going ahead of SkyWest pilots.
Look at our own FOM, SkyWest dispatchers are right below SkyWest pilots and above any other pilots.

I just cannot believe what I’m reading
