The Great Jumpseat War of 2019

You have to follow the process. You can't just say "we're married" without some ridiculous ceremony where your mooching in-laws can stuff their faces.

If the company can change the working conditions "at will", which it sounds like they can, there is no collective bargaining agreement. A CBA is the cornerstone of representation.

Great! I get that.

And your advice to someone who has one and has gotten the same directive?

Richman, what's your take on how much discretion a union line pilot has at following the unions directives?

To keep it simple let's keep it in the context of this issue that is brewing at this very moment in our industry. The one where 3 pilots groups are going to jumpseat war against 5 others. Techbically beginning in like 41 minutes.

Hot damn, someone page James Van Der Beek because this shizzle just went “Dawson’s Creek”

I say that unless there is a revision to your FOM that comes out at midnight, follow what the FOM says. Union policy does not dictate company policy and compliance.

Are some people really not realizing the difference in a JS agreement and non-rev travel? If it's a JS follow company FOM, if its non-rev travel the major carrier owns the seats and and give them out as they see fit.

Your FOM also says show up to work but if your Union leadership says stay home, you're supposed to stay home. That is kinda the whole point of unionism. This is philosophical "trade union" questions being asked with real world serious repercussions for those involved. Now supposedly starting in 3 minutes.

I'm not sure you are following here. Skywest and Republic flies across all 3 brands of majors. So those that show up that only work for United exclusively asking for a skywest or republic jumpseat on Delta or American will be denied a seat even if there is a seat in the back (still a jumpseater, just rolled to the back). Those exclusive UA pilots will have to buy a Zed fare to in order to ride on that plane (since they dont have any further non rev benifits with Delta or American). Again, jumpsest war.

You need to call your rep. Do what he says.

O I'm following, but the only losers of this war will be those at the 3 regionals. It's one thing to have unions or in Skywest's association disagree with a change. But for those pilots to stick it to guys who had nothing to do with the change just seems super petty. I would say it also makes pilots at those airlines look bad to those of us watching the "war".

SAPA has lost my support on this.

Not because they’re wrong—UAL trying to grab power on UAX seems to happen about every two years (and yes, there was a big kerfluffle about this back in may) and there’s been a tremendous amount of toxicity from mainline pilots (regional scum know your place, etc).

They’ve lost me because of the tack that they’re taking about carrying united pilots being a FOM violation, and treating “non-compliance” as such.

I’ve even seen them comparing people carrying united jumpseaters to scabs.

They’ve lost me by trying to strong-arm their own pilot group to counteract the mainline intimidation and thuggery.

Frankly, this whole thing has pissed me off and left a sour taste in my mouth. I don’t like being bullied by anyone, whether it’s my own company, or UAL ALPA, or SAPA. I can’t countenance either one, at this point.

I’m checking out of the whole damn discussion.
