The Future of JC

Thoughts on “The Lav”

We need somewhere ti dump the non sequined posts.

How about if I make the Lav something a user can’t see for the first, say, month and the. Do something like $5/year for people that want access.

Super nominal but discursive.

It would dissuade new people from going there (because pilots are cheap), it wouldn’t attract users because they don’t even know it’s there (it’s not indexed by search engines or even viewable if you’re not already registered).

Pros? Cons?

I don’t have my glasses on so please excuse the typos.

I know one some other sites you must “opt in” to the politics forum. Maybe make the lavatory non-aviation, and create a politics sub forum that a user must opt-into to view and participate. That way when someone hits “new posts” they won’t have to sort through politics.

I’ll be very honest. I stopped by a few times between my departure from aviation and my slow return now, and I was turned off by how much anti-law enforcement stuff there was here. As someone who prides themselves on doing things the right way, and being a vocal advocate for productive change, it sucked coming by and seeing that I’d probably get painted by a broad brush. I’d hate to see people feel the same way when looking for advice to further their career.

For what it’s worth, I am turned off by LinkedIn for a similar reason, but it’s all the political videos of “YOU MUST SEE THIS” when I’m simply trying to connect with people to help grow airborne law enforcement and the utilization of drones for public safety. I don’t need to see what Trump or Biden did today.

People say hateful things here without considering that some find it hurtful. Nobody is going to change another's mind with such things. I stay out of politics cause there is just no point in talking about it. Like in the cockpit. No reason to talk about politics and religion no matter what your stance (and I'm very Christian). For the most part, things people feel comfortable saying in this medium, they would never say face to face. At least I hope so.

I'm late to this thread and I'm sorry.

I just want to add my name to the long list of people who owe a significant portion of their career to this website and to Doug. I showed up as a kid and learned a lot from a lot. I met some great people and they helped me get my current job. My family is being taken care of indirectly by Doug every day. It's your turn to do the dishes, by the way.

I don't know what we need. I think the community needs to grow or it will eventually die. Discord is a good idea. Do a podcast. Community profiles. I think the forums could definitely use a re-indexing and consolidation. Or do none of that I don't know.

I think we could do charity drives. Raise some money for something. We could vote on different charities to donate to and do an annual drive. We have so many people willing to do so much here, maybe we should focus that good will.

No matter what, thank you. If I can help, I'll try.

For a lav entry, one should have to boost the new discord server. Kills two birds. Barrier of entry to the lav and creates a better discord server with greater perks for all.

Or, have the discipline to quash the need to make those posts, with no Lav.

There’s no requirement to have to host non-sequined posts on an aviation site.
Well, I would personally miss the Lav, but I guess one can only look at another’s dog or food pictures just so often😉.

Grateful for my several years in this “living room,” it seems inappropriate as a guest to tell Doug the best way to redecorate.

It’s merely a suggestion, all to find some reasonable middle ground, which I’m sure there will be. You are a rare exception to the dumping ground posts that are all too common in the Lav.

I had to think long and hard about replying to this thread for fear of retribution, but I wanted to offer my view point for whatever it may be worth. I'm painting with a broad brush, but for better or worse, it is how this forum helped shape my aviation career.

When I joined this forum 20+ years ago, I was firmly on the track of transitioning from military to airlines, so I came here to find out what life at the airlines was like. What I found was many people who have adversarial relationships with their companies, people who love to argue about anything and antagonize each other, and threads that drift off topic quickly into unrelated discussion that make the whole thread worthless. It made me realize I didn't want to join a workforce that would make me bitter, so I pursued a different path away from the airlines where I would be more than a disgruntled number. Much of the content here helped me explore corporate flying, but wading through the off-topic chatter got to be too much work for too little reward.

I used to spend a lot of time every day here reading all the new posts, but I get so tired of the same old echoes and name calling that I rarely come by here anymore. I've found other forums where discussions stick to the topics without all the member bashing, so that's where I spend my time now. I didn't know I could turn off notifications for the lav until I read it in this thread. I'll do that and see if it changes my experience here.

You aren’t the only longtime member who has expressed a similar sentiment with the off-putting sides of JC.

So with someone that has had a negative experience, what would you change if you were running the show?

You offered a problem, now offer a solution. (I don't mean this in a condescending way, I'm genuinely curious how you would change things.)

The Lav serves a purpose though. People self-identify as a-holes prior to play-acting as "normal" or "sane" or "I am not political I'm just interested in my airline industry and specifically MY job and I don't care about anything else" prior to someone giving them a rec and then having it blow back on them. Just a thought.

Like me - There is probably very little difference between my ideology and @Boris Badenov @derg @JEP or @SteveC ...yet through the miracle of the Lav everyone clearly sees that I'm the asshat they don't want to walk in a resume for. It is literally saving career progression for many!

The AMF-UPS deal is sweet.

However, I think some got too wrapped up in “I’ve got to get to DL/AA/US as fast as possible so I can take a selfie and grow my followers” without realizing there’s more to aviation than self promotion.

I literally had an FO say “I was at (freight carrier) but I need to be seen” — I really didn’t know what to do with that.
Don’t hate me bacause I’m beautiful 🤣. There’s a plethora of reasons I can see leaving cargo but that’s an odd one.

Ok, I'm probably going to be the designated •...but maybe it needs to be said.

Maybe we've all become the people we reviled back in the day. The "remember whens", trying to wax poetic about the old days, the same people we used to make fun of when we were all younger.

In some ways it's about the job, the task, the environment around you, some common cause or feeling of togetherness due to a the fact we were all on the same track. And sometimes that carries through to people who come in at the beginning of the course, just as you were finishing yours.

As we move on, we want to remember those who shared the same trials, gave us some chuckles, made the course a little lighter than it was. Perhaps a get together, now and then, with people we knew, perhaps a toast to empty chairs.

But as we all age out, and move further on in life, our distance from the path removes us from relevancy to those just starting, and they neither want our advice, nor is our advice even relevant, except in the most general way ("stay off the drugs, kids").

In this case, not only are we distant from the folks just starting, but the medium has moved on as well. We could be banging on about old person stuff on a 1200 baud BBS or Compuserve for all the young'ns care. Or Usenet, or any other of the myriad forms of medial that have come and long since gone. Could be ham radio talking about four-course radio ranges for all they care.

I remember an old quote from a grumpy old teacher: "You do what you do tolerably well. But you have to ask yourself, is what you are doing worth doing?"

I joined 10 years ago for career advice. Now I’m here to just blabber on and feel like I’m part of a community where I can keep up to date on topics and such (not the lav but aviation related). I don’t know many of you personally but behind screen names and photos, I do and I like the community we have here.

I use to be a lot more helpful during my CFI days or regional days but now not so much. Don't really get messages for such help anymore, which is ok.

I remember the original front page of JC, "Hi my name is Derg and I'm a pilot on the 767." That was one of my initial learning experiences to get into this career. What about an interview series for existing members across multiple facets of the industry? Q/A style or Autobiography, whatever works. I also like the podcast idea but heck, just record the Saturday zooms, and that's basically a podcast...

Yeah, but since the MER-ger, I only get 12 baud.

I’ll leverage lav access for class b clearances.

But for real this site has helped me professionally with giving me a better idea of the other side of the mic and understanding how you’re all wrong about everything and it’s never my fault. I’ve also met two of my best friends through here and finally went out and got my ppl because of this site.

On the flip side I met @DPApilot through here and he drank all my whisky, and @mattc206 possibly fathered my child so there is that.
