Thoughts on “The Lav”

We need somewhere ti dump the non sequined posts.

How about if I make the Lav something a user can’t see for the first, say, month and the. Do something like $5/year for people that want access.

Super nominal but discursive.

It would dissuade new people from going there (because pilots are cheap), it wouldn’t attract users because they don’t even know it’s there (it’s not indexed by search engines or even viewable if you’re not already registered).

Pros? Cons?

I know one some other sites you must “opt in” to the politics forum. Maybe make the lavatory non-aviation, and create a politics sub forum that a user must opt-into to view and participate. That way when someone hits “new posts” they won’t have to sort through politics.

I’ll be very honest. I stopped by a few times between my departure from aviation and my slow return now, and I was turned off by how much anti-law enforcement stuff there was here. As someone who prides themselves on doing things the right way, and being a vocal advocate for productive change, it sucked coming by and seeing that I’d probably get painted by a broad brush. I’d hate to see people feel the same way when looking for advice to further their career.

For what it’s worth, I am turned off by LinkedIn for a similar reason, but it’s all the political videos of “YOU MUST SEE THIS” when I’m simply trying to connect with people to help grow airborne law enforcement and the utilization of drones for public safety. I don’t need to see what Trump or Biden did today.

People say hateful things here without considering that some find it hurtful. Nobody is going to change another's mind with such things. I stay out of politics cause there is just no point in talking about it. Like in the cockpit. No reason to talk about politics and religion no matter what your stance (and I'm very Christian). For the most part, things people feel comfortable saying in this medium, they would never say face to face. At least I hope so.

I'm late to this thread and I'm sorry.

I just want to add my name to the long list of people who owe a significant portion of their career to this website and to Doug. I showed up as a kid and learned a lot from a lot. I met some great people and they helped me get my current job. My family is being taken care of indirectly by Doug every day. It's your turn to do the dishes, by the way.

I don't know what we need. I think the community needs to grow or it will eventually die. Discord is a good idea. Do a podcast. Community profiles. I think the forums could definitely use a re-indexing and consolidation. Or do none of that I don't know.

I think we could do charity drives. Raise some money for something. We could vote on different charities to donate to and do an annual drive. We have so many people willing to do so much here, maybe we should focus that good will.

No matter what, thank you. If I can help, I'll try.

For a lav entry, one should have to boost the new discord server. Kills two birds. Barrier of entry to the lav and creates a better discord server with greater perks for all.
