The Future of JC

Still got my "Pur-T-Neat" that I purchased 27 years ago. It still works...kinda. Been back to the factory twice, been through several sets of wheels, modded with a couple of, ah, "field mods", but finally the big zipper blew out and the factory wouldn't touch it. Got a local shop to look at it, and they said "hah, ain't no way you're fixin' that. Last place that had the machine that big went out of business 5 years ago. But lets see what we can do.". They fussed with it a few days, did some hand stitching, kinda sorta fixed it, but they warned me it was a sketch repair.

I use it for road trips now, and broke down and bought a new one for work.

I actually hate this luggageworks bag. It’s heavy and somehow I can fit so much more in my little 21.5 inch Osprey Ozone. Everyone who lifts my bag says something about me packing really light, but in reality the bag itself is just way lighter. Plus the Osprey actually has some useful pockets.

This week's Captain has that or something similar and it does look cool. I really like my B&R because of how light it is empty too, and surprisingly the thing is holding up alright. It'll need a handle eventually.

The empty weight of the Luggageworks is bonkers.

idk why anyone buys the metal frame ones, they're heavy as hell and bend the frame in a year
had the plastic one for almost 10, holds up well but i wish the handle quality was better. might try to swap in the one from the normal luggageworks
The fabric on mine already looks like •. I mean I know 2 leg commute to fly a guppy is a hard life but durability was supposed to be their whole thing…

The handle is why my Osprey is out of service. Thankfully they're awesome with the Almighty Guarantee (TM). I'm on my second bag and the last one I thought was pretty easy fix but they just opted to replace it.

I mean, I got it because it was free, initially* and everyone seemed to have one. But I realized, swaying it into the overhead one day, just how heavy the freakin' thing was and that along with having to reliably send it back to get certain bits that were ostensibly user-replaceable changed due to their poor engineering really soured it for me. When Bendo pooped gold dubloons (gave us double pay for New Years 2022, I think it was) I bought the B&R stuff.

* included in cost of working for the Mormons and ironically embroidered with ALPA's logo at their expense.

That's how I have two StrongBags rollers, I ordered a new covering and they were out of stock of just that part so they sent me a whole new bag. Pretty cool tbh.

Both REI & Eagle Creek made very similar bag designs about a decade ago and they were perfect for me in function. Should've purchased a bunch for back stock. I'm on a Travelpro FlightCrew non metal commuter bag nowadays and it pretty much fits the bill.

I remember that kid (Ian).

There is a huge demand for high school age kids (and their mom's) to learn about piloting careers. I'm on a facebook page that has 18K members. Mostly parents who don't know squat about aviation who kid has shown an interest come there to learn about the career. Would be great if we had people on here tell their career stories on a JC home page that could be linked to.
Great Idea

I feel a little bad taking advantages of the Almighty Guarantee (TM) considering how often I travel with the bag, but honestly for being on the road 17 days a month it's held up extremely well. The first one had the metal frame at the bottom (serves as both fame and feet) broke when I was zipping it up. I figured it would be an easy fix, but they gave me a choice from their current offerings. This one the handle began sticking about half way down at very opportune times. Coming back from Vegas I was "that guy" who stowed my bag long way in the overhead bin. Thought I was going to get yelled at, but the flight attendant was understanding when I mentioned it was broken.

Wife also had an osprey bag that got a puncture while we were checking it. They decided to replace it and instead of patch, she asked if she could substitute for a different bag as she didn't find herself using the backpack straps as much as she thought, they had no problem.

I haven't had to send the Briggs in just yet but I assume it'll be painless.

Seriously what the eff are you people doing that the weight of the bag is anything but a feature?

It's stable, I sit on mine all the time, it's solid... it holds everything I put in it, and I can stuff it until it's basically a football. I just don't get it—I can't imagine why some little plastic bag would be any better.

because i can do all those things and it weighs half the amount of a metal one without the sexy hourglass figure the alum one gets the first time the frames hit an RJ gate check cart

id have gotten the carbon fiber one if it wasnt a gazillion dollars and an obnoxious high gloss resin

I’ve got the metal luggage works only because it was all I could get with my left over uniform allowance before leaving the regional life behind.

That being said it’s become more of a pain than anything else and I’m really liking that Osprey bag @Screaming_Emu posted above. I’ve got a few other bags from them for other uses and they all hold up well and are trouble free. The luggage works is just too much of a brick that never seems to fit all I wanna bring along anymore.

Ok, but ... why is lighter better? I prefer heavier. As far as the frame warping ... *shrug* I dunno. None of that stuff bothers me. If it broke, or didn't function properly, or didn't hold enough, or wasn't reliable or robust, or user-serviceable... that'd be different. I think I have zero original screws ... third set of wheels, but it's still going strong.

To me I think the weight is its own worst enemy. Every time it gets tossed around if you have to check it, it gets that much more banged up because it weighs as much as a CRJ. There's nothing that should happen to a bag that should cause a frame that thick to bend like that.
