Talon pilot arrested for being drunk.

STP was like that band that my privileged fraternity friend played at a party. After my time (I'm old)...lost on deaf ears.

And can they fire an alcoholic or would that make them liable for treatment

I see nothing wrong with firing an alcoholic, IF he shows up to work unfit to fly. In my opinion, drinking or using drugs is a choice, not a disease. The arguments that it is inherited seem pretty weak, and the social influence argument is much more plausible. That's not to say though that we shouldn't have programs to help people change their behavior, like HIMS. Let's just call it what it is, a choice. A lot of people in this country seem to have a need to find a victim in everything.

I agree. Once they decide to show up to work drunk, they've crossed a line and shown a lack of judgement that isn't commensurate with the job. Maybe this is rock bottom for this guy, but he is pretty well known in the corporate/charter world, and this isn't a big surprise to anyone within 6 degrees of separation from him. I wish him the best, but it looks like he will have to find another profession. Not to say I have never messed up or gotten wasted, but I would never show up to work drunk. That's what sick days are for.

I'm not defending the guy, and showing up to work drunk, especially as a pilot, is inexcusable. But your "opinion" about alcoholism is pretty irrelevant if you're not a doctor. Just like the anti-vaccination crowd.
Ok. I'll refrain from giving an opinion on any subject in which I am not a professional.

Well I just go by definition :D

"The modern disease theory of alcoholism states that problem drinking is sometimes caused by a disease of the brain, characterized by altered brain structure and function. The American Medical Association (AMA) declared that alcoholismwas an illness in 1956."
