Meh you can get mountains for cheaper elsewhere. Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, etc. heck even the east coast mountains (no they aren’t hills). I vacationed in TN once, the Smokey mountains were nice. Not like the Teton mountains we saw in Wyoming but still very cool in their own way.
CA is too crowded, waaay too expensive, and too liberal. But the biggest thing is distance to family. I’d take any base in the Midwest or East. Texas, Illinois, NY, Florida, you name it I’ll go there. Though it’s gonna take another merger to make that happen.
Agreed about CA (except CO, good luck with that!). Although PDX isn’t expensive if you move an hour or so out.
Everywhere else you mentioned sounds like a challenging commute. Oh, and doesn’t Chicago have crazy taxes? At least that’s what the thousands that have flocked to Colorado lately claim.
