CA is too crowded, waaay too expensive, and too liberal. But the biggest thing is distance to family. I’d take any base in the Midwest or East. Texas, Illinois, NY, Florida, you name it I’ll go there. Though it’s gonna take another merger to make that happen.

Agreed about CA (except CO, good luck with that!). Although PDX isn’t expensive if you move an hour or so out.

Everywhere else you mentioned sounds like a challenging commute. Oh, and doesn’t Chicago have crazy taxes? At least that’s what the thousands that have flocked to Colorado lately claim.

Illinois overall does but they don’t call it Crook County for nothing.

No I won’t commute, I’m on reserve and there’s really no way to commute to that and have a family life. I moved to base.

Everyone says CO and WA are expensive, yeah, but nothing like CA. This is one state where you get hosed everywhere. High state income taxes, high sales taxes, and unless you pass down property by family, you’ll be assessed for proper value and taxed accordingly which are still some of the highest property taxes.

Like all big cities, no one I know actually “lives” in Newark or Detroit. It’s the suburbs that are well outside the downtown city. Obviously I’d pick a safe quiet neighborhood and city. Same thing with Chicago.

Colorado is probably closer to CA than you think, at least on the front range. It’s certainly accelerating toward SoCal costs at an alarming rate. Good luck finding an affordable home on a pilot salary in Boulder, north Denver (The Highlands), Golden, etc. It’s not anywhere close to the place it was even five years ago, in almost every respect.

You could always move to Aurora (CO, not IL), which is where a lot of the Midwest transplants go these days. Of course that’s also like the worst place ever if you like mountains. Nice commute to DIA though.
 
4 bdrm, 2-3 ba, 1800 sq ft. In the area I am, that’s $1mil and higher.

I’m fairly confident I could do better in WA or CO, depending on the area. I don’t see DEN as a base though. If UAL bought us, I’d head back to EWR. If SW bought us I’d go BWI. If Frontier bought us I’d do ORD or MCO over DEN. Pretty much any airline except HAL or ALK can get you to a pilot base in the Midwest or East coast.
 
As an aside... the UA and JetBlue threads on APC with people flipping out about the drag show in Newark. And the Pride flag being flown at Jet Blue headquarters/training center is sad. But hilarious and entertaining. Why are white guys so threatened about everything different that isn't about them?

Ehhh maybe poor wording but I kind of know what he means. Everytime I lurk over there it seems like a huge "I'M GRUMPY AND HATE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE ELSE SHOULD TOO" fest. Dunno why it seems to be such the norm over there. It is kinda hilarious though. Knew a guy that got freaked out because he accidentally went to a "gay bar" and told us about it a bunch of times over. "Yeah? They'll probably buy you a drink!"

The problem is when those idiots are somehow considered the majority. In you’re experience, do you think most white guys really care about the United drag queen festival?
