Swa in bos

Starting service in the fall.. At least there is some good news these days.
Whats next? CLT > ATL>??

I'm starting to wonder at the erosion of the SWA business model. They've always said "We got to BDL and PVD b/c BOS is too congested," then they start this up. Odds are better than good that BDL and PVD will see a drop in traffic since people from BOS won't be driving way the hell out there anymore. Question is....is the bump in traffic from going into BOS gonna be enough to offset the loss in PVD and BDL minus the landing/gate/airport/whatever fees? I'm assuming an egghead in yield management ran the analysis and gave a thumbs up, but who knows?

I know when I was there just a scant 5 years ago, they flew into ISP and BWI b/c LGA and IAD were too busy. So much for that plan, too.

I seem to remember years ago they marketed their "NY-BOS" service but it was really ISP-PVD. I think they included a bus ticket up to Boston???

Just talking to SWA folk, they seem to be disappointed in the direction of their company. I think it has less to do with operating out of LGA or BOS as it does subcontracting foreign carriers etc.

Yeah, the whole WestJet and WhateverMexicanCarrierAir they're using is causing a lot of grief. They could make a killing flying from CA, AZ, NV and TX to places in Mexico. Too bad it looks like those routes are just gonna go the "code share" way.

I remember being shocked when they announced PHL when I was working on the ramp. The shock has now worn off after they followed it with PIT, DEN, SFO, IAD, LGA and now BOS.

Where are the serving from BOS? I assume BWI PHL MDW maybe a PHX or two, but have any routes been announced. I too wonder what will happen to places like MHT and PVD where WN has the most flights....

I know back in the day (aka 2002-2004) Allentown, PA, Richmond, VA, Savannah, GA and Colorado Springs were all the rumored cities. Guess they're too small time now.

I think SWA has run out of "small" cities to serve and because their whole business model is based on growth they are forced into the larger cities. They've proven they can handle Philly so LGA and BOS are something of a natural next step. The thing I wonder about is, as of now they've kept aircraft that rotate through Philly on their own schedule so the delays don't cascade system wide. As they increase the number of more delay prone airports they operate into, will they be able to maintain the integrity of their schedule?

See, that's my concern as well. There are still plenty of other cities nearby to major metro areas they have yet to serve. A few months ago, their business plan was "no new stations, just more connecting the dots" b/c of their fuel hedging faux pas. Now it seems they're junking what sounded like a sound business plan in a recession....again. For those of us that look at them as a potential employer down the road, this is a bit of a concern.

True. If history is any indicator, this could be another "That's NUTS and will never work!" idea that SWA is famous for coming out shining. If Herb were still in charge, I'd think it was some sort of master plan. With Kelly in charge, I just don't know. He's only been in the hot seat since 2004, and it hasn't been the best of times there.

I was just speaking with a SW crew on an overnight....They said this is no longer "Herb's Southwest." Their negativity showed towards the current management and they said that the current group is no different than other airline management.

My question regarding Mexico ops....did they figure they could make more money doing the code share thing with Volaris than flying their own equipment?

Why use your own equipment when you can outsource equipment and staff for cheaper? ;)

That's what I suggested about the business model for running an escort service that catered to pilots, but the whooooole legality issue kept creeping up.

Could have called it "LAYovers". Why should a CRJ captain have to wrestle with his FO over the one flight attendant where he can call "LAYovers" and not have to worry about an awkward hotel shuttle the next day?

HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY amounts of :sarcasm:

You know that there's always a small amount of truth in sarcasm!:sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm::D

Are you and Doug saying that some crews engage in those sorts of activities while on a layover? At a crew hotel, essentially on company business? Interesting......Not sure what that has to do with SWA going to BOS. ;-)

I think you all bring up good points, it will be very interesting to see how this works... See to me, Southwest is a risk taking company, from hedging fuel to flying to smaller airports ect... This BOS move is just another risk. I am a little dissapointed that they decided to outsource. I hope its just a temporary thing due to the recession. But if Southwest can help pull at least some "displaced" pilots back into work, I'm all for it!
