SWA Early Out and Extended Time Off.

I think a lot are concerned about what would happen in a bankruptcy scenario too.

I was wanting to ask this but didn’t want people to think I thought SWA was in that situation. Does this get thrown out by a judge in bankruptcy? That could possibly leave people in a horrible spot.

I don't think anyone knows.

No. I'm dead serious.

I've heard some say they won't go because the company won't pay them anything for their sick bank. Or because they won't get any contributions to their 401K. Or because health care isn't paid for.

I think they're in the minority but the reality is that there are only about 1100 pilots between 60 and 65 at the airline right now and I would be (pleasantly) surprised if more than 50% of them take the permanent leave option.

We all have those guys, unfortunately.

”Free tacos, ALL DAY!”

”SOCIALISTS! Nothing is free!”

”Do you want a taco, free of charge?”

The bankruptcy question came up in the town hall today. Basically they said we are the best positioned of any airline right now cash to debt ratio but if it did happen you would essentially become an unsecured creditor in the bankruptcy process. Like Zap said nobody really knows.

One other thing for some of those guys to consider is the excess benefit plans, the company can‘t dip into them but if bankruptcy were to happen they aren’t shielded and you would become an unsecured creditor for that money. So some of them will be taking a chance either way.

I think they are both great deals especially considering the overall picture of the economy at large. I also think if SWA does go bankrupt that a lot of other dominos will have fallen and there will be no safe harbors.

Its a great offer! But holy jesus can people complain about things.

Im a year 1 guy and I was thinking about the ExTO lol.

Ive had caps tell me they couldn't live off 200K a year, and Im like.. so what are you gonna do in 6 years when you retire???

Just gotta figure out what’s important to you.

My advisor says that generally people go nuts for a couple years, travel, buy toys, do stuff and then they kind of just hang out on the couch. :)

I mean, statistically, a couple years is all retired airline guys have left anyway right? :)

Checks out

I told her “Oh man, when I retire, I’m going to at least fly to Europe or Asia every month for a week or two, maybe get a small apartment in Tokyo and just explore. Maybe teach English in a small town and leverage the Japanese I speak. Get back into writing and... and...”

She was all, “Yeah, I’ve heard this before. Trust me, a couple years of all that stuff and then you’re just going to be tired and out of things that interest you outside of a 30 mile radius of your couch” :)

Concur.

After leaving Iraq in 2017 it was go, go, go to Europe every 3-4 months for a month.....and then came 2020.

Started off nice in January in Lisbon.....then the big suck.

Hoping to head back to Brussels in November over Thanksgiving, but the first/business/flying experience won't be the same for a very long time and travel in general will not be as enjoyable as it was.

I don't think I'll take the full five years but we are looking at 6 months or a year. It's not a money issue because my wife works full time. I need to figure out how I'll spend my time. I can't just sit on the couch eating Doritos for a year. I'll need to find some sort of meaningful pursuit whether that's going back to school, or learning a trade, or doing a little flight instructing. I'm open to suggestions.

Buy a little airplane and do a few laps of the US. Find a good organization near you and volunteer for them full time. Become a webcam model.

Nobody is going back to a full schedule. For years. Not sure why you keep thinking everything is going to be fine, but it’s not. Prepare.

@Roger Roger and @jtrain609 should see this too.

Is your next rant going to be that racism and police brutality is a lie too? I'm just trying to tease out the edges of your disbelief.

Nope. No rant either. I’m just bringing the facts.
Right now, we have a murderous cop, and criminals. I think the real 99.5% America is sadly watching from the sidelines.
