SWA Assistant Dispatcher Posting

It is up.

And they're off....

Really? I don't see it.
I see it now. Thanks. I'm curious about this part.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have 1 year airline or related work experience with a Part 135 or Part 121-air carrier under the Code of Federal Regulations.
Any idea if this is a strict rule?

You will have to answer yes/no to the question during the application process. Seems like if you answer no you will go into the TBNT pile (automated process)... since it says "Must" and not "Preferred"

No clue but if they are you will probably get a auto reject. But it never hurts to try.

Well that sucks. I guess I need to go get a Part 121 or 135 job somewhere.

I was very curious what they meant by experience, I selected "yes" based on my two years of airline operations. Unfortunately no dispatch experience...yet.

Ken, I believe that they were very precise with their wording. I also have the impression that your experience certainly 'counts' as a worthy yes. Realistically though, it won't 'count' the exact same as dispatch experience (of course). That being said, take heart (or Luv, if you prefer).

The beauty thing about Southwest is that they seem to write their own book:
Once upon a time, there was a little girl that wanted to work for the fairy-tale airline (but decided to be an Air Traffic Controller instead) and so went to a 'cattle call' for Flight Attendants, and this is what they said:

"We try not to put too much stock in people's experience or education, since we can always teach someone what we need them to know. So we hire primarily for attitude." (Granted, I'm paraphrasing - it's been a few years...but you get the gist.)

Don't get me wrong, I'll still be studying like a fool that goofed off all semester...in between releases...

But it never hurts to try.

From the "HR" part of my experience, that is not exactly good advice. It can hurt. Applying for a job that you do not meet the requirements to can be viewed as being unable to follow instructions (In the future, when you DO meet the requirements they WILL look back at previous apps). Also, if you are applying to a lot of different positions within an airline - they see that. So adding one more to the mix that you aren't qualified for just makes it look even worse. There is a category called "motivational fit" and someone who applies to every other job they can find raises an eyebrow. Especially if they are jobs they aren't qualified for.

Not trying to beat anyone down by ANY means - but think about the big picture and when you finally DO meet the requirements do you want a previous application on file that never had a chance from the get go?

Also FWIW this isn't specific to SWA or this thread necessarily, just general job-seeking advice (unsolicited of course lol).

I'm not sure I agree with you. In fact I'm sure I don't. If you don't apply the answer is always no, and if they hold this against you later in your career it's their lost.

I'm not saying it WILL be held against you - just something to consider. In my previous work life ( at a major airline, different department ) I'm telling you for a fact that people who applied for jobs in the past that they did not meet the requirements for, it brought up serious questions that made us look at the candidate VERY closely.

It wasn't always a major deal - but to say that "It can't hurt" isn't exactly true. Following instructions is a big part of a lot of jobs, and how closely one follows the instructions on job postings are fairly indicative of how well they will follow instructions IRL.

I would personally NEVER apply for a job if I couldn't answer "Yes" to all the stated requirements. Because, I *know* the automated system is going to reject the application and I don't want to be viewed as being unable to interpret the stated requirements. JMHO.

Thanks for the advice. As soon as I saw the Work Experience requirement I knew not to apply. I will pursue this when I meet the requirements.
