Strangest ways to pass the time

CFI A&P

Exploring the world one toilet at a time.
I'll preface this by reminding people not to post incriminating or anything unauthorized that would be clear violations of company policy. What are some of the things you've observed your coworkers doing to pass the time while at work? For example, we've all heard the urban legend of someone clipping their toenails at a time and a place that they shouldn't be. Another example, one that I've witnessed, was someone that would lick Dorito chips, but not eat the chip and discard it in the trash because they liked the nacho cheese taste. At a different job I had a brillant coworker that would write fiction novels with pen and legal pads then transcribe their work to the computer after shift at the the house. Personally, I've always tried to fill the gaps with some sort of learning exercise or just squander away time here on JC.

C'mon, there has to be some interesting stories out there about what people did to pass the time as a piston/ turboprop freight dog during the sort, or CFI in between lessons, and like me finding ways to lollygag while "watching paint dry" during maintenance events.

I bought a rubiks cube recently. I have journals I write in for each of my kids. Sometimes read.

Long time ago at Eagle a guy got his laptop out and started playing StarCraft 1. On like a 1 hour flight.

With the long flights and hotel overnights I spend a lot of my time creating and editing YouTube videos (I play a lot of poker, badly) So the footage becomes shorts (~1 min) or long form format (~20-60 min). A local place is having a live stream in March that they asked me to be on - so that was kind of exciting.

But I think it's kind of strange because it's tedious, meticulous and labor intensive to slap videos together. I mean really, who finds tedium fun?

I like the idea of making YouTube videos, not in an attention • way or in a trying to be an influencer way, but more just in a “check out this cool thing!” Way. But it’s really just too much work, and I’m swearing off corporatized social media at least for a while.

I’m a football coach so I spend time creating/reading/studying schemes, and plays. Guys ask me questions from time to time and it’s cool to me explaining what Cover 2 means or how offensive plays are created for different situations.

You can still create the videos and find a less annoying platform to share them on. I make edits of drone (and regular) video I take when traveling. Not so much at work (or in hotels) though, because my laptop isn't powerful enough to handle 4k editing.

I have been toting a sketchbook and a couple pencils with and trying to get myself drawing occasionally. I’m off to a rocky start but hey it takes time to build new habits right?

Realizing now I have never had a job where I could afford to pass time. 😳

Maybe start being a "content creator" on the TokTok.

I swear to god the isolation and down time is what makes the weird old captains so weird. The way we socialize in this job is not what our brains were evolved for and they don’t handle it well.

I run and go for lots of walks on overnights.

Currently building legos to fight boredom at home. A run didn’t go as planned and I broke a bone in my foot. Hopefully I can continue running once it’s healed.

Video games just never kept my attention, I really tried.

I will be buying this bad boy later on this year. Getting into longboarding when I don’t eat schitt.

As far as on the clock, right now just mostly pick’n boogers and trying not to bother the ole skipper too much. I just got a library pass, so will be checking books out to read as long as they’re within approved you know whats it.

I’m pretty sure our FOM prohibits it, but if it didn’t, most public libraries are set up to let you check out audio books on your phone, and that would be a pretty neat way to pass a transcon, if only our FOM didn’t prohibit it.

Correct. The books will be for downtime in the hotel mostly, trying to minimize time watching the tele or doom scrolling

Audiobooks (and podcasts) are my constant companion while exercising, walking around the layover, and commuting. Also, if you have a kindle or other e-reader, that’s a great option for reading on the go as you don’t have the option to be distracted by social media • on it and again, you don’t have to give bezos any more money if you use your library’s app.

Damn, I really need to get a California library card. I bet the ebook and audiobook selections are out of this world.

I’ll be looking into that! Will libraries load ebooks onto a kindle?
