Anyone at Spirit can confirm they are looking at or actually moving headquaters to Orlando. I heard through a third source.

That has been a rumor for a while now....even JetBlue was rumored at one time to be moving down there.....

I think that rumor died when their CEO retired this year. He was the Air Tran CEO and I believe he lived in Orlando. From what I understand the new CEO wants to stay in S. Florida. A friend who works there told me the rumor is now they will probably move closer to FLL.

This is pretty accurate. But nothing is set in stone yet as the actual move is still several years away. They do have a back up OCC in MCO....and DTW.

Random, but what’s the logic behind the DTW backup OCC? MCO I get, but it would take hours just to get staff from Florida to DTW. Is this in case a hurricane wipes out all of Florida?

Spirit was founded in DTW plus if you have a hurricane that's causing an evacuation you might want to get more than a couple hundred miles away.

But how do you maintain operational control of your flights during an evacuation big (hurricane) or small (tornado, fire alarm)

Only half of the OCC went. They flew up on spirit's aircraft a couple days before, set up the gear, and then called the FLL OCC to officially take control. Those left in FLL left the office after giving control to those in DTW and went to hurricane parties near their houses. After the hurricane, DTW called and gave back control to FLL, then flew back to a day or two later.

Very simple with a hurricane since you see it coming days ahead so you have plenty of time to set up people at your backup site we’ll ahead of time. lol, it would be much harder if hurricanes dropped on top of south Florida out of nowhere

For a hurricane you fly a group up a day or 2 before evacuating. For a tornado you have a sacrificial lamb and not let any more aircraft take off. For a fire you stay at your desk unless your life is in danger (have had an FAA guy say this)

By the way, every airline has to maintain a backup control center, and from time to time you have to demonstrate to the FAA and your insurance company that you have a plan in place on switching your operation to the backup facility and that you are able to execute it....

Fire alarm is going off, is your life in danger? LOL

So then why when the fire alarms go off at centers do they evac and go ATC ZERO? Btw those alarms were caused by contractors getting dust in fire detectors during construction.

You would have to ask an ATC guy about that. I just deal with that dispatch life.

According to a former coworker that dispatches there now, they are supposed to make an announcement this month regarding a new HDQ and/or OCC location.

A source of mine said it's going to be a big announcement, so the scuttlebutt is it's not just a move but a merger to Las Vegas....
