Spirit Airlines Strike Update

Well the company just sent out an email with the "terms" of the offer and suggested we call our association and tell them to "discuss what is fair".

Don't think that is going to work...

If management is appealing directly to the pilots to put pressure on the union, they are shooting in the dark and truly have no plan.

hey Joe,

do you know if there is a link to any information that talks about what portions of the contract are still on the bargaining plate and an explanation for why they haven't been able to come to terms (in layman's terms)?

Kristie,

They usually won't put something like that out, during a time like this, because they don't want to negotiate outside of the committee and possibly within the news media.

If this were not the 12th hour, then we would probably have seen much of this information as each section of the contract was closed out.

The company waited too long on this and it is in their best interest to get this contract in place as soon as possible.

Spirit has now announced that flights are cancelled through June 15th. Total loss to the company thus far is in excess of 8 million dollars. That works out to $16,000 per pilot.

the spirit scab website shows two Falcon air pilots

They flew "struck work".

I'm really distressed about the FO's "I didn't know" attitude.

Looking at his resume, he's not new to the business, obviously can use the internet and apparently didn't do the minimum level of scrutiny about what he was asked to do.

1970, ok.

2010? Good grief man, get off FarmVille and onto Google and see what's going on in your industry. He just wrecked his career permanently.

What a great experience it was being there on Friday and early morning yesterday. It stinks it had to end up with a strike, but management brought that upon themselves.

The Spirit Pilots are a great bunch of people and we need to give them ALL the support we can! I'm going overseas tomorrow on vacation, but if y'all are on strike when I get back, see you again on the picket line!

I was able to make it out to FLL to walk the line with my brothers and sisters.... it was a great turnout with folks from Spirit, Gulfstream, Atlas, and a few other carriers that I did not recognize, so I apologize if I didn't mention your company. I am glad I was able to represent Colgan today and might be there tomorrow as well since I doubt I will be able to return to IAH tonight.... jumpseating is painful to say the least. Keep the faith!

I agree with you on this...it made no sense to me that he claimed he didn't know what was going on. Even if he didn't know (which I'm not convinced of), wouldn't it seem really odd to be called to do another airlines' flying? Wouldn't one be at least somewhat curious as to why they were doing a couple of flights like that?

Not being on the 121 side of things, how does this wreck ones career? I mean, I can see it being a bad thing if he was to go to a union shop, but is there some kind of scab list HR looks at, or is it just a list you guys look at prior to flying with someone new, or does the CP have something to do with it? I'm not understanding......

It's not something that's really a function of HR, but more something that the person conducting the "line pilot" portion of the interview would look at. (Assuming that the airline has one).

Some airlines have it in their contract that pilot's must be member of the union (I believe APA/American is like this...correct me if I'm wrong please).

A good friend of mine, his dad is a 76 Captain at Hawaiian...he was in training at AA's sim in DFW for the 76, FO in training with him scabbed at some point in his career...he (the FO) was asked to leave the sim hall.

It's just bad all the way around and I would somewhat liken it to being a convicted Child Molester in prison...it's not going to be a fun time for you.

Many companies ask for recommendations from currently employeed pilots. They also like to know what your previous employment was. When they run background checks and ask around it won't be hard to see that you are not a team player. He might as well go back to the netherlands and flight instruct with his own airplane at his own airport. If I see this clown its on like donkey kong.

P.S. We are now facebook friends. :)

Is there going to be more stuff going on in LGA? I don't finish my trip in time tomorrow, but if it's still going on come Tuesday I'll be walking somewhere.

If the pilots union does not give in, they will get what they want unless the management of Spirit doesnt mind shutting the airline down.

Does ALPA have a plan if worst case scenario Spirit does close down? There are around 400-500 (not sure exact number) active Spirit pilots. Delta will only be able to hire some due their flow agreement. But will Spirit pilots accept regional new hire jobs if need be?

The obvious management strategy is going to be to hold out as long as possible and try to get the pilots to choose between having a job and making concessions. The longer the pilot hold out, the more likely management will cave. Dont be surprised though to see the airline take a hit from the lost revenue and possible cut back on flights and pilots. Getting a deal will be good for those on top but bad for the bottom if a furlough comes soon after.
